May go back to selling phones.

So I've worked selling cellphones in the past and I remember making very comfortable amounts of money with commission.

What I am wondering is if there are any places where I can get commission without being pressured to sell absolutely useless accessories and warranties.

I do try to push some accessories because, they are things the customer has a legit need for and I am cool with doing so. I will usually try to get them to grab a case, screen protector and car charger which are all useful things. I'll (politely) explain why a screen protector and case are useful for protecting a 500$ phone they paid nothing for.. And how the latest and greatest phone has worse battery life than their 10 year old nokia.

The problem that tends to arise is when a customer walks in wanting a free phone, they in many cases just don't want accessories and walk in knowing that they aren't buying anything.

I mean, at my last job it was out right horrifying, because people were actively being "let go" for not making enough attachments. It actually got to a point where people would stop making sales because they were selling too many phones without making attachments. Which is a bit more detrimental to the company.

So, any chance things will be different at any other stores or is it going to be the same pretty much everywhere atm? It wasn't nearly as bad in the beginning.. but, things got pretty bad after a change in management..

my company is fairly leniant on accesories and warranties. Granted you still have to hit a minimum quota but, if a customer wants to buy a free phone with nothing, I don't worry it sicne i know it wont kill my month (unless all i sell is free phones with nothing). realistically if you just mention case screen protectors and a car charger you will be golden and hit your minimum every month. (same thing with warranties, i literally mention it once to a customer and those who do get it are plenty for the month with out me having to really push.

I'll PM you some of the more specific details so you can see exactly what we have to try for.

Is it an authorized verizon/att/whatever store or just an independent?

I didn't know people got fired for not selling accessories but it makes sense considering how aggressive salesmen are when you walk into a cell phone store.

I worked at a third party retailer which sold tmobile, at&t and sprint. They will usually have what are arguably better deals at third party resellers.. The problem is, the salesmen are in many cases under a much stricter quota to meet so your actively hurting them if you don't buy anything. I mean a 5$ pack of screen protectors will probably make their day.

Unfortunately, I can mention it as many times as I want to. I can suggest it as politely as possible and where I use to work, they still normally refused. Although that could also be partly due to the culture of where I worked.. That company demanded we pushy pretty much everything in the store.. I swear if the associates did everything that was expected of them, the company wouldn't get any business, because customers would get tired of being harassed.

I work for best buy mobile, and we do not get commission which kind of sucks. The money isn't that good, but I like my job and I have great advancement opportunities.

I seriously feel for you man. I would almost rather commission than advancement opportunities.

I mean if your good at selling, then you have career opportunities even if not with the store you start out at.

If you find your *good* at selling phones.. You may want to consider working elsewhere, because your not getting paid near what your worth.
