Mb usage on the desire

Ripstop

Newbie
Im using a desire on talk mobile, i get unlimited(500mb.) usage a month, ive used this in under 3 weeks, and never really used it much.
Anyways to cut down on mb used?
IE should i download on pc then transfer to desire?

Im lost with this, can somebody please help me.

Hello all.
Im using a Desire, and am running up a lot of MB, 500 so far, and ive 3 days to go until my new usage.
How can i cut the usage back, ive had 2 tunes on you tube, but thats it.
I do browse most days, and have downloaded a few games from some of the free apps Ive installed.
Is there any way that i can save this usage, ie should i have i net off all the time until i am using it?
Should I use wi fi more?
And should i download off my pc first and then to the Phone itself?
im not very good at all this stuff, so please be gentle with me.
Any and all help is much appreciated.

First of all, turn off mobile network by holding down the sleep button then pressing the bottom option if you aren't using the internet. It will stop any background downloads. Second, use wifi as much as possible and you won't have any problems keeping under the limit

put a widget on your homescreen so you can turn mobile net on or off, dissable some of your apps too from updating automatically, and only download apps through wifi.

I only download updates/apps at home via wifi and find that I use less than 100Mb per month on phone data.

Just turn off automatic syncing and just watch how you use it lol. Something as simple as refreshing your Facebook uses about 5mb

as long as u dont watch vidoes, or listen to web radio over 3g, 500mb shud see u thru the month, wifi everything u can..., i never use more than 150mb a month of my allownace..., start with youtube tho, and your a gonner lol..

+1 for turning off Mobile Network. I manage my data use by having data sync turned on all the time but Mobile Network turned off. When I'm at home or near an AP I turn WiFi on and turn it off just before I leave. On those few occasions when I'm not near WiFi, I'll turn Mobile Network on just long enough to sync everything then I turn it off immediately.

You might also want to look into a data counter widget such as Data Counter Widget, free from the Market. It will tell you both WiFi and Mobile (Cell) data usage daily, weekly, and monthly. And you can set up a monthly billing date so that it resets the counter when you're billed.

Ok, thanks for the replies, will try some of the hints and tips mentioned.

How do i sync data?

Also, how do i know im near a wi fi spot?

Sorry to be a pest, but how do i download apps from my pc, and them transfer them to my Desire?

If you have both mobile network and wifi enabled, the phone will use wifi automatically when an open one is available and will switch to mobile network usage when it is out of range of available wifi. If a number of wifi points are available it will list them and request the password if required. If you are using wifi a fan shaped icon (a dot with a series of ripples) will be visible in the notification bar (at the top of the screen).

Any wifi usage does not count towards your monthly data allowance so I tend to use it as much as I can. I use my wifi network at home and then the mobile network when I am at work/out and about. I have email, weather and facebook set to sync every hour and only download apps via wifi. I tend to get through about 200mb per month.

When its connected to mobile data you will either see H, G, 3g etc in the notification bar at the top if it is on wifi you will see the little wifi symbol which is like a little radar (can't think of another way to explain how it looks)

You can also adjust how often your phone checks for updates for things like facebook emails etc. Most of these can be found in Settings> Accounts & Sync but the email ones (not gmail) are found within the email app itself by pressing menu > settings when you are in this.

I have 1gb allowance per month and find that just about gets me by. I am a heavy user and have gone over 2gb before but with the right settings 500mb will do you fine.

u dont, open up the market icon, it downloads everything u want straight to your phone, look into getting apps 2 sd, it will auto save apps on the SD card, which will save space on the internal memory which is quite limited...

Thanks for the reply, my phone is saying 7.21(ive an 8gb card.) available memory, but its coming up on the screen that i ahve no memory left, not even enough for 1 sms to be read/saved.
How do i use this memory.

Its coming up orange wi fi.
that will be my pc i take it as its on orange.
it asks for a password, How do i give a password if i dont know it?
Are there general key words that work all over.

The screen once ive made a password comes up wifi disconnected, but there is a green tick next to that, now when i click on, it turns wifi off, my orange wifi is an excellant signal, but still no wi fi symbol is coming up.

Ripstop, and any one else who is new to the Desire: There is a User Guide available which you can download here. It answers many of the questions asked in this thread and elsewhere.
