Help Me and my New Note - from an Iphone user...

Ok, I have been with iphone since the beginning and fell in love with the note...but I have been having so many issues. I realize it could just be my newbie-ness but I need help. I think I may have solved such as SOD ( sleep of death) but other confound me.

First and biggest one...why do I keep having to re-choose wi-fi? I am in my house, (FIOS) phone falls asleep for extended period and I have to go in and turn it back on? This also happens at work (COX).

Second I have been told to do a hard reset and since there is no itunes like set up, how do I back up my phone/apps?

Any insight welcomed...once I get these two solved I can move onto the others.:)

The wi-fi I'm not sure why you have to keep choosing it. You can try going into settings and see if you have an option under WiFi for advanced options - a lot of new phones have the ability to choose whether you want to keep wi-fi on during sleep. Make sure yours says 'always' if you have it.

Backing up can be done using an app such as MyBackUp. That's the link for the free version. It will let you use it for 30 days. But definitely check the settings under wifi before doing a hard reset.

might be an obvious question but have you checked you wifi settings? Check settings>Wireless and network>Wifi. Make sure it's ticked and your wifi network is connected. Are you using a battery saver app? Sometimes these apps will confuse your phone if the settings don't line up.

My advice would be to install BatteryXL and configure it to turn on WiFi when the screen is unlocked. I use this setting and my WiFi is always on when I wake the phone.

Hope this helps...

Eric Ritchie.

And watch your phone freeze up with the black screen of death.:)

Funny you mention this, my phone did just that after I was done showing a co-worker a game. I had to power off the phone and reboot, but then all my settings were back to default, I previously had a Go Launcher theme fixed up nice and tidy, no I have to redo everything.

Was it because of Battery XL? I thought it might be go Launcher.

I've had a look on the XDA developers forums and apart from talking a foreign language there appears to be a number of apps that might cause this, not just BatteryXL to be fair.

Interesting, might be a combo with go launcher too, I like go launcher but if going to cause random shutdowns then I can live without it!

I never had shutdowns using Go Launcher.

BatteryXL is bad news for me. If i'm not careful with my settings, it will turn off "Data/4G", and never get it back! Not worth the trouble so uninstalled.

No need for BatteryXL to keep WiFI on with screen off anyway, as mentioned earlier go into WiFi settings and in the advanced screen (menu button in WiFi settings brings up the advanced option) select the WiFi sleep policy you want.

It is certainly is true that I get the sleep of death once every two weeks or so, but this was also true before installing BatteryXL. Like I said in another post I am still trying to track down what is causing this, but it is looking pretty random at the moment.

I'm pretty happy that I haven't had the phone randomly reboot yet, especially after having the Evo 3D. It got old.

Well, if it makes you feel any better: I like this phone so much that you would have to pry it from my cold dead hands ;)

I've had mine a month now and I've not had any of this SOD stuff. I'm running BatteryXL but only as an experiment while I collect some data, not a necessity.
My phone will always connect to a wireless network that it recognises (home, Work and the boozer) and shut down the 3G element. If anything it's a little reluctant to switch back to 3G when it looses wi-fi. This happens when I leave the office, set up the navigation and drive out of range. The Note tells me that it has lost it's data conection and I have to exit navigation and restart the app. It will then fire up the 3G and all is well. No idea why, I can only imagine that it's a setting somewhere as I have a data counter with permissions installed somewhere too. It's more of an inconvienience rather than a ball ache :D

I have never had an issue with Wi-Fi not being available when I needed it. Wi-Fi is active all times whether the screen is on or off. In fact, I use the phone for streaming music throughout the house and usually the screen goes off in 30 seconds to preserve the battery.

I have not had any freeze ups on my phone so far, knock on wood. I do not use battery XL, but I do use Juice Defender to provide some help in extending the battery.

The only reason your Wifi is automatically switching off when the phone sleeps is because of some "power saving" app. Check which one is doing this & Uninstall that app.
