Media Device MPT driver problems

cntryby

Newbie
I have read on this and other forums until I have a headache and my eyes hurt.
I have deleted Installed uninstalled, installed reloaded until i have know idea what all I've done.

I'm getting the MTP drive load fail problem.
I also can't connect via wireless to my PC. (I did once, then error "interrupted" message then no more.)

About the only thing I haven't done is factory reset the phone. The day I got it I left town & spent three days setting this thing up... I don't wanna have to do this all over again.

This is a major fail by samsung that we can't just plug these high dollar phones into a PC & they work. I mean seriously... what the &%^ were they thinking?

I'm on big red BTW, if that makes a difference. I'll buy somebody a few adult beverages or dinner or whatever, if they can help me get this thing working. I need to get my picture & music to my PC. I can use the ext SD card, but thats a pain in the arse!

What really ticks me off is even if I get this set up to work at home, what kinda flame hoops pile of poop will I have to try'n jump through when I want to share my files with someone away from my PC. Say I want to plug into their laptop... IT WONT FRIGGEN WORK!??:mad::mad::mad::mad:

OK...

rant off... for the moment

HI,
My name is Bill & I have a problem.:(

I have been having problems getting the phone to connect to my Windows 7 64-bit PC, i have tried several if not all of the guides here in the forum with no success.
I have finally found a way to get it to work every time (its a bit long winded but it allows you to use Kies)

Left click START

Right click computer

Left click properties

click device manager

Click arrow to left of "universal serial bus controller"

Right click on "Samsung mobile USB compost device" and click on uninstall.

After the box refreshes the above will have gone from list.

Plug phone into USB and you should get a pop up (bottom right of screen) saying new drivers are being installed, click on this box and you can see windows searching for updates, this usually works fine but it can take a couple of attempts.

This is a bit of a pain in the arse but its the only way i have found of getting my phone to connect so i can use Kies.

Edit to add -

Sometimes when it is searching for drivers it only lists two " Samsung Android" and "CDC abstract controller modem" and misses the MPT driver, if this happens just repeat the above and eventually it will work.

Mod edit:

Merged from bpsanborn's entry to streamline:

Also run Windows Update. I have had two Samsung driver updates come down on Windows Update in the last week.

HI,
My name is Bill & I have a problem.:(

1. you have all the proper drivers installed?
2. youre using a PC or Mac?
3. its NOT Samsung that changed the way file transfers are handled its GOOGLE...
4. until we can get this figured out...try using AirDroid from the play store...it requires that you be on the same wireless network as the computer you're connected to but it works through your computers browser so it will work with any computer without installing any additional software...i cant remember if it allows access to both internal and external memory or not, but it will at least allow you to connect to the computer

I had/have similar problem as well. When i connected my s3 to my desktop computer through usb it wouldn't recognize it until i noticed that "usb debugging" automatically checks itself under settings >developer options. Once checked off the pc recognizes it wonderfully, but every phone restart it goes back to being checked. I have no idea why it does that... But phone does work with kies air whethet checked or unchecked. Hope this helps.
Fyi: i never received an "mtp load drive fail"

I have the TM version. Nothing worked for me until I installed the Verizon drivers. Now it works perfectly.

I have tried checking the debugging box. I un installed all the drivers then plugged the phone back up... No dice.

I un install all software and drivers before trying the next steps for each attempt.

I've tried downloading the drivers from Samsung for kies and the usb drivers... No dice.

I've searched fo windows drivers... No help.

I've tried all the above with both ptp and mtp... No difference. If

I was shocked when I saw kies flash up with connecting status. I started copying my music and it looked like it was gonna take a while so I walked away. When I came back it had the message "connection interrupted". It would not reconnect and I haven't been able to make any connection since.

I have not tried airdroid, or drivers from Verizon. I'm away from home for a couple of days again so I won't be able to try until this weekend.

Thanks for the replies, keep them coming.

When you tried Kies, did you open it from the settings? Or the app? Mine won't work from the settings. It only worked for me opening app then entering the ip address. It works perfectly for me that way. No problems thus far.

I'm new to Samsung so I could be mistaken here.

From what I found last night, the app works with Kies Air. In settings, the "Connect Kies from WiFi" is for the Kies software you have to download to your PC from Samsung's website.

Kies and Kies Air are similar but two different programs on my PC.

I have a mac and the only way I can connect is by using Airdroid, I came from iphone and I am loving the phone so far, but the connectivity sucks! This makes itunes look good.

Will there ever be a fix from Google or Samsung?

I fixed my issue with a down and dirty method.

ONLY DO THIS IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING.

Uninstall all drivers/programs for your S3
Start
Run Regedit
Ctrl+F
Type in Samsung
Proceed to delete every entry that has anything to do with USB drivers
Press F3 to do a "go to next match"
Plug in your phone and it'll reinstall drivers, and it was working for me!

Did you try connecting in camera mode?

Nice one.

I just tried setting the phone to Camera (PTP) and my problem is sorted, it now connects every time, now when i click start/computer i see a camera listed as a portable device, clicking on it shows two drives phone and card

I can now move pictures play video and everything i expect i would have been able to do if i had it set on Medis Device (MPT) and it had worked.

Yes the version In settings goes with software you download to your, however I was saying that way didn't work for me ;) I didn't realize they were different. Thanks for clarification. :o

Im on Windows 7 and im having the same issue be it Kies or just connecting and trying to access the SD card without Kies, 5 out of 6 times crashes my IE, I gave up with the USB for now and use AirDroid to transfer files.

I have wiped the drivers clean and reinstalled numerous times and nothing works.

No it didnt but I found out what it was finally, the Samsung USB cable SUCKS, I have a bunch of HTC ones and I used one of those now everything works fine my Kies etc.

My Samsung cable now gets used for charging only it is useless for data transfer.

Problem solved, check your USB cables people!

This was also the root of my connection issues that I ran into awhile back (including a faulty Samsung that came with the S3). Just about any cable will charge fine, but data is another story. In my case, the micro USB cables that came with my Logitech remotes (Harmony 600) were vastly superior and solved my data connection issues.

- What, exactly, did/does Windows do when you plug in your phone? Did/Does it see the phone at all? Does it not find a driver? What?

- Forget using Kies if Windows can't see the phone

- Are you using a USB 2.0 port? Don't use 3.0

- Try connecting to a USB port directly off of a controller (use Device Manger | View by Connection to check), not a hub (hubs are internal as well as external)

- Can you now connect another USB 2.0 device with the same cable and USB port to prove the port and cable are good?

Windows SHOULD recognize your phone as two devices if the drivers are installed properly (forget Kies)...if its not i suggest the regedit approach that someone posted as something worth trying...because there is something causing an error here..

on a Mac you need Android File Transfer...which is a terrible program...

the real culprit in all of this is Google and changing how file transfers are handled in ICS+...i understand what they were getting at with removing USB Mass Storage mode...but i think it should still have been left as an option...

always try a few USB cables as well...i had an iffy cable at home that kept giving me problems...

Reading through the comments made me think about my old phone... The charge... I very well may have some left over Samsung junk in my registry. I wont be able to check until tomorrow.

Give this a try

I just tried setting the phone to Camera (PTP) and my problem is sorted, it now connects every time, now when i click start/computer i see a camera listed as a portable device, clicking on it shows two drives phone and card

I can now view and move pictures play video etc as i would have been able to if the Medis Device (MPT) setting had worked properly.

If the option does not come up in the notification bar when you connect your phone, how would you change this setting? Is it somewhere else in the settings menu, even without having the phone plugged in?

You need to pull the screen down where you access wifi, GPS and mobile data etc (for want of a better description)

Click on "connect as a media device" and then change it to "Camera (PTP)

Let us know if it works.
