I recently got a motorola atrix 4G and it was fine for a few days. Afterwards it started heating up beneath the battery (where the processor was) and losing battery life quickly. Checking battery usage (which I had kept on the home screen since the get go), I noticed mediaserver was taking up large amount of battery usage which it hadn't previously. I was running pandora at the time, which I had recently downloaded, over wi-fi and so thought nothing of it. It makes sense that an app serving music to me would show up as mediaserver.
Later, however, the heat and battery usage by mediaserver continued although I had shut down all media apps using task manager (and then double checked with advanced task killer). I plugged it back in to recharge, then unplugged it so that the battery usage reset and mediaserver was still using a large percentage of the power draw.
The solution, it seemed, was to shut down the phone and reboot. After this the heat died down and mediaserver wasn't present on the battery usage list after the shutdown.
My interpretation of this set of events was that pandora had started using mediaserver and then it was still running (doing what?) after pandora shut down. On reboot, it didn't get restarted since pandora wasn't active.
My question is: Is there a way to control mediaserver apps so that this doesn't happen and I don't have to reboot my phone? I tried killing all these apps and they showed up as shut down, but some thread or process or something was still showing up as mediaserver and running down the battery life causing heat buildup until I reboot. Is this a runaway thread?
thanks!
