Memory Card Read Only Issues - PLEASE HELP!

Real Loki

Newbie
Hi, if this is a repost then please feel free to just hit me with a thread link.

I've started this thread in the hope of saving me having to go to the usually clueless monkeys that work in phone shops (i find only 1 out of 10 know what they're on about) to be told I'll have to send my DHD off to HTC.

My problem is that I tried to play a music file that I've played loads of times but all of a sudden my screen took ages to refresh when I pressed home to then show a message saying memory card problem detected mount read only. I've looked at the card through an old phone on a PC and the properties on the folders and files also say read only.

Please does anyone know why the memory card has been changed to read only and is there anyway to change the card back to a usable format?

Any assistance is much appreciated.:o

Thanks

Hi, I've now just seen that there's a Desire HD -Support and Troubleshooting part for problems and issues so I apologise for posting this on the general board and hope my school boy error doesn't put off anyone's kind assistance... :(

unmount ur sd card while in DHD and then format it, then see if it works

whts the capacity of ur card and what make ?

Hi Saj, It's just the standard 8gb Samsung card that comes with the phone. I don't want to lose everything saved on there or have this happen again if fixed. I was looking to see if this was a known problem with the phone or software.

I can still see all the files but frustratingly I can't delete or move them on the pc and I can't even see my photos on the phone.

Anyway of formatting the card on the phone if I do have to resort to that?

the default card should not be cuppurted or fake

goto settings->sd carc->unmount sd card->then format it->then mount it

Thanks but when I press unmount SD card or format it does nothing. The options seem to do nothing so I'm starting to think there's a real problem with the card.

Any ideas please?

Not having much luck st the mo with my beloved DHD...

why dont u try with any other sd card and see if it works

Yeah the strange thing is that I tested another 8GB card (San Disk) which had the same problem but when I was on my way to the phone shop after I fitted it (I had less on that card to lose if it needed to be sent off but I now know that I would send it without one) it worked so sounds like the phone could be the cause.

I would have thought that my Samsung card should be ether currupt (i've heard this can happen due to a software update and HTC are giving new cards if they're called regarding it) or not work at all rather than be read only!

I would have thought at least someone would have heard of this issue before as quite specific?

Thanks again for your advice though. :o

hmm if u suspect ur phone has some problems, try doing a factory reset, then use new sd card, format in phone and start installing new apps and transferring music videos etc from scratch, its a bit time consuming but I suggest to every new android phone owner. I did it myself when i got my DHD

Is this this something you advise doing when you 1st get your phone whether you have any problems or not can I ask?

Think I might actually just send it off (was in store today) to HTC as looks like i'll lose everything what ever i do and i might get another memory card in the process or maybe even a replacement phone!

As I'll lose all my apps (got loads so need to make a list) will I have to re purchase the paid one's?

ur paid app whont get lost as its tied to the google id u signed in to ur phone, I normally do the factory reset and format before I 1st use my phone

and yeah it should be under warranty so send it off to the shop where u bought it, they may replace ur handset also

Hey, I also had this problem on my HTC Desire and in the end i thought i was going to have to format the SD Card. However i put the SD card into my computer's card reader on Windows 7 and i was able to browse the whole SD Card so in 'Computer' in the start menu I right clicked on the SD Card 'Removable disk whatever' and selected properties, and from there i could do an error check, once the error check came up i ticked both boxes to find errors and to try and fix bad sectors automaticlly, after it finished it said 'Some problems were found and fixed'. And it's still working to this day. When it happened to me i looked on loads of forums and nobody could help so i thought to try that in windows and it worked! I'm not sure if it works in any other OS but i did it in Windows 7. Well worth giving it a go if you can. I hope i was able to help :)

Hi, Just an update on this memory card saga.

I called T Mobile today (the store just suggested that i send the phone off) and after putting me on hold while the checked with HTC they finally came back to me to let me know that the memory cards corrupting to read only is a known issue. HTC are going to send me another card and they want me to send my one to them as they are investigating into if It's a faulty batch of cards or the phone/software. Doubt I will though...

Hope this helps others with the same problem. :D
