Possibly stupid question, but do text messages use up memory on the phone? More and more lately if I'm running an app, once finished, I get the white screen with green HTC logo and then have to wait for everything to refresh and slowly come back to life.

I do have 3700 messages to my fiance on there and under task manager, seem to float around 80mb free.
 
This refresh issue might be caused of not enough memory (RAM). Other HTC phones has the same issue. Updated with a larger Sense ... but in the same amount of RAM.

But your text messages are stored in the storage where the message app and the other apps are stored.
So your amount of texts shouldn't be the reason for the refresh issue.

hmmmm getting a bit annoying. Ram seems to be still around 80mb of ram free and can't seem to do much before the screen comes back again

Don't get RAM and storage confused.

RAM is available for the OS to use at any time and will continually clean down when an app or the OS is not using it, you phone will happily (if not a little bit slowly) run at 100% use of free RAM, although I guess eventually it may freeze, but this is just a symptom of an underlying cause.

Storage is where your sent and received Text messages will be and they should not affect RAM. Go to settings > Storage and see how much free storage you have (not RAM) - If your storage is nearly full and other apps are trying to write data to storage, this maybe part of the problem.

You need to find out what apps are running when the crashes happen, is it just when you send messages or is it across all apps?

Seriously - It's a mistake a lot of people fall into - They see the word memory, and assume it's storage.

It might be you are just maxing it out at times and when you close the app/apps the OS is struggling to clean up RAM, and a reboot is the easiest option.

Yep gets tad annoying, missus just says it's overuse. Trouble is reboot takes age but then spoilt a bit with the speed of a One S as a work handset. Time to shop in the old HD I think
 
Have you rooted it?

Mine like having a new phone, it's quicker, less resource hungry and improved the battery life - Or are you looking for an excuse to upgrade???
 
Been tempted but nervous. Battery life always could be better, never been happy with it. Just noticed you in Devon as well

As for ROM, that's a matter of taste, if you are just looking for a 'leaner' HTC style ROM, there are plenty of Sense ROMS available, personally, I like the work the guys at ' The Collective' do, but it's not sense so may not be for you.

Have a look on XDA developers for more info.

You can restore to 'stock' once rooted, by using the manufacturers RUU, links are provided on this forum somewhere I'm sure. But as always if you are thinking of rooting, do a bit of research first.
 
Once you root, you can go back by running an RUU. Branded RUU's are more difficult to come by but, if you root using the AAHK, then you would be able to run the unbranded RUU - this would return you to stock unbranded. OTA updates would come direct from HTC (with no carrier bloatware).
