Help Merge vs. Link contacts

When I first setup my M8 I add my google account which adds my google contacts into my phonebook. I also add a facebook account which adds my facebook contacts to my phonebook. after a while the phone suggests to link all my duplicate contacts which I do. I notice there is also a "merge" in the phonebook settings menu. I am wondering what the difference is between linking and merging contacts. there is clearly two seperate settings in the phonebooks settings menu. just as a note, i have never had anything come up in the "merge" menu, but my google/facebook duplicates come up and i automatically link under the "link" menu.

I believe that to merge the contacts means that there will no longer be duplicates. So if you have two contacts from different sources say for your mom...they will be merged into one contact for mom. The information from both duplicates - if different - should be available in the one new "merged" contact.

thats what linking does. i have mom's phone number in my contacts and i have mom on facebook, it will link those two together.
