Hey guys I've just received a text message containing this:

BSTFREEMSG You are violating data Terms & Conditions. Continued violation will result in account termination. For details click http://msg4u.us/apde
And this is the site i went to:

http://boost.tmce.biz/wap4?app=whatsnew&c=bst&NEXT=SMS212&tag=CDMA

I was wondering why i had this problem, I have been using my phone as a hotspot for more than 4 months with the Foxfi App, but recently switched to Wifi Tether App, I was wondering how i got this message just now? Has anybody got this message too? I mean i don't use it excessively only for surfing on my laptop when I'm at work, if so is the problem because i switched to a different App? I need some more info on this, and if there are people still using their TU as Hotspots. Thanks!

Edit:

I've read around the forums that I'm not the only one experiencing problems with the Foxfi app, and its also where i found out that they are now charging for hotspot usage XD that's just crazy, and the Foxfi problem was the reason i used the Wifi Tether App free on the market, is that what caused me to get that message?

I use Foxfi all the time and never had any issues.I did notice that I had to switch to proxy mode every once in a while but I'm not complaining. I use it for more than just light browsing too:) I sure hope I don't get that text anytime soon.....If I do I'm sure pdanet and easy tether would still get the job done!

Wow that sucks!!! I've been using FoxFi but only a couple of times a week.

I know it really does suck I don't know how I was found out I mean I'm not the only one who uses the service I also got my payment down to $40/Month, i don't want to lose my services...

Yeah i hope nobody does get this message, it kinda scares me now to use the Foxfi app or any hotspot app for my phone now...

What scares me more is how they caught you in the first place. One of the main reasons carriers started sneaking ciq onto peoples' devices was to monitor how the device was being used and try to restrict and/or eliminate "free" tethering (tethering where someone wasn't paying for the supplemental plan).

Now I don't know nearly as much as I'd like about all the various signals that come from our phones, how they work, and ways to monitor that info, but it seems to me that this situation stinks of ciq, or some similar monitoring code. It could be that the carrier modified the "Wifi Tether App free" or knew what to look for from that app to suggest "illegal" tethering. I dunno though, just my two cents.

All wireless providers have the ability to natively monitor the traffic going across their network with or without software like CIQ, which if i remember correctly was only on HTC phones. It's simple protocol monitoring. It just involves filtering high data usage users into their own group then filtering through the websites viewed and data protocols used. There are obviously certain websites/services that can only be viewed using a PC. But of course that data monitoring isn't always restricted to high data users; they are just easier to catch and more of a nuisance to the overall network. And that type of monitoring was agreed to when you signed up for service.

Yeah i was wondering at first how i was caught using the hotspot feature or tether on my phone my first guess was also because i switched to a different app that they had already known about and it connected without any problems not like the Foxfi app that just started to have issues, but yeah as the guy mentioned they might have already known that people use the tethering on their phones especially for unlimited no contract plans like mine...

Thanks for the great info, i learned a lot from your post and now I'm just wondering if I'll still use this feature once in a while or just stop all together, it was nice when the Foxfi was still working no issues whatsoever so i dunno what to do now even though i have internet here but its unreliable because its shared i just wanted a secure service for when i check stuff on my laptop.

if i don't get that text form boost i would be amazed my cable is out. So no internet or TV... been sucking down data like honey dew vine water for a week now with both pdnet an foxFi an ya hate to lose my shrinkage.

Yeah i did that before too and never had an issue until i used the free Wifi Tether App on the play store i guess that's when i got caught i should have just stick to the Foxfi app or try the PDAnet the other people are using but i'll wait for a month or 2 just to make sure that i don't (hopefully) get caught.

Yeah i guess you are but i know there are more like you and me that push the data to its limits and not everybody gets the same message i got, haha just look for an alternative if it ever happens im researching now on what to do next lol.

Would orbot or ssh tunnel fix this issue?

I really don't know sorry I'm kinda new with all the tethering and stuff, whats the orbot or ssh tunnel? can you give more info? Thanks

Orbot:Tor on Android
AKA The Tor Project is a anti network surveillance app that allows mobile phone users to access the web, instant messaging and email without being monitored or blocked by their mobile internet service provider. it seems interesting you can find it on the market or just google Orbot:Tor on Android

ssh tunneling i don't really understand so from the wiki SSH tunnelling allows you to create an encrypted connection between your local machine (e.g. your home PC) and the NetManager at the remote site.

Any updates? I just received that same TXT, and I use WiFi Tether. Wondering if you've continued to tether without warning?

Thanks,

So far this appears to only happen to users using wifi tether. I wouldn't use it. Try FoxFi. I still tether a few times a week and so far so good.

I have been tethering for over 6 months with daily excessive use (600mb a day ATLEAST) with foxfi and have never gotten a text. I will not use a different tethering app after seeing these posts. But as of today I FINALLY have an isp so I shant be tethering for some time if ever again.

I as well had been using my tethering for a long time until i couldd afford to get internet at home... i as well used my phone ALOT and when i say alot... i mean like 600 MB in a few hours! I used my phone to play xbox 360 online, and yeah it lagged like hell, but then i started using the lag to my advantage... I also used foxfi because it give u infrastructure mode... hello people adhoc is like a computer to computer network... nope if i need it again, foxfi it is... hell, they've even taken it off google play lol foxfi .com / bin go there now to get foxfi... no spaces of course... pz

Cannot get this app to run on my EVO DESIGN for Boost. Wondering if it's caused by an ICS update that was included with the phone?

Receive the message that "Wifi mode has failed on your phone. Please use Bluetooth mode instead."

I've tried all the tips and tricks with no success.

According to the developer's app decription in the Amazon App Store Foxfi's wifi tethering won't work on any HTC phones, only blue tooth tether. Sorry but you'll have to find something else for your HTC.
