Help Messages always loads a draft, or opens wrong thread?

The messaging app on my EVO 3D is being annoying:

When opening a thread with my best friend, it always opens with a sentence or two from a text I wrote (after completing and sending) a few weeks ago. So then I have to delete all that text before I can write something.

When tapping into a message thread from the all messages list (which I usually use the widget for), or sometimes tapping into the all messages list itself (from the widget) or sometimes even tapping into a message from a notification, it will open up the thread with my wife rather than the one I selected. This happens most of the time but not all the time.

These are just two specific examples of these things happening in varied similar ways (opening up a text and there's a very old draft there; or tapping to get somewhere in the messages app and it taking me somewhere else), and they happen a lot of the time but not all the time.

Does anyone have any solutions for these annoyances?

are you the only owner of this phone? was it purchased used/refurb/ebay/craiglist?

how many sms messages do you have stored?

and you are using the STOCK app yes? do you have any other 3rd party sms apps on board?

i read you use the widget. what happens if you go directly to the sms app from the apps list?

did you remove the widget and re-add it back?

did you clear/free up storage memory?

do you have the latest updates?

Pretty much always

It came from Sprint's replacement phone company as a replacement for a broken EVO 4G

how many sms messages do you have stored?
I don't know, but I got the first EVO 4G in July 2010 and I'm pretty sure I've backed up (and reloaded) all my messages with each replacement phone. So, a whole lot.

Yes, stock SMS only


i read you use the widget. what happens if you go directly to the sms app from the apps list?
I just tried this and it worked fine and quickly (the problems don't always happen every time though)

did you remove the widget and re-add it back?
I just tried this (and used the widget that shows the full message instead of just one with a single line of the message I had before) and selecting messages from the widget works correctly. The draft I mentioned is still there though.

did you clear/free up storage memory?
You'll have to be more specific. I sometimes delete apps to make more room. I certainly don't want to clear out my message memory though.

do you have the latest updates?
I believe so

By the way, I just tried clicking on a the message thread with my wife from the widget. It took me to a blank window with her name at the top, but before the message loaded it took me back to the "All Messages" screen. When I clicked her name from this screen, the screen went blank and then loaded the "All Messages" screen again. The next time I clicked her name I was able to get to her message thread.

sounds like its a widget issue.

do you have a lot of icons on your homescreens? do you have live wallpaper? or images for background? all of this eats up memory, and if you have a lot of apps running in the background, this could cause issues with widgets, as all of these things eats up memory.

in terms of clearing out and freeing up memory, there are steps you can do to remove temp files and other items that eat up ram and storage memory.

also if you have a lot of sms messages (hundreds or more) this can cause issues as well.

just sounds like you may need to free up some old sms messages and/or remove some widgets or other items from your home screens that may be fighting for ram memory.

just suggestions. its hard to diagnose over the internet.

My homescreens are relatively simple. No live wallpaper or even custom wallpaper (just some blue curtain type thing that came with the phone). I have the messages widget, the Business Calendar widget, the stock calendar widget that shows my next event, a GTasks widget, Pocketcasts,, brightness (stock), battery (stock), a Mint widget (which doesn't even seem to work) and some 3rd party volume widget. And of course a bunch of shortcuts and folders.

I do probably have a ton of messages; I've restored from backup (MyBackup) for every replacement phone since my first EVO 4G in July 2010. So I'd welcome tips on how to delete old messages or caches or whatever. Thanks.

if you want to delete old sms messages, just go into the app and delete them. you can back them up on the stock client and save them elsewhere.

maybe you should look into 3rd party apps that offer more features.

I also have this issue on my HTC EVO 3D and I know the cause... It's related to task-switching and the widget.

The steps to reproduce the problem is as follows:
1. Use the Messages widget to go directly to the conversation you want and write something, then switch to another app and get back to Messages by holding Home or the widget again.
2. You'll be in the conversation with the text you typed, then finish writing your message and send it.
3. Now exit the app and go to the Messages app again through a shortcut or app drawer. Open the conversation and the text from step 1 will be there saved as draft.

I've reported this issue to this HTC already but they simply said they sent my report to the development team but don't quite promised they'll be delivering an update to fix it... So please, since it also affects you, could you please report it also to HTC/Sprint so we can raise their awareness about it??

It pretty much ruins the experience of having the widget, that's the worse.
