Messages (and notifications) appearing twice

okvaal

Newbie
Hi. Problem: messages (email, not SMS) are appearing twice of some reason. I am now using a Galaxy S4, but as this also was the case with my former cell phone (HTC Desire), I suppose it is an Android issue.
I am using a gmail account, which I have added under Messages/Settings. May this be reason things are a bit messed up?

If i am following you correctly are you saying that you set up gmail account under the normal email account and the gmail account?

Well, yes, maybe that's what I've done. If it has anything to do with the Messages settings at all, this is what I've done: Settings/General Settings/Added accounts/(my gmail address). Loosely translated from Norwegian, that is. I DO have to add an account to let the phone know where to get my messages, or am I wrong?

ok I think I see what your saying that you have set your phone for your gmail account. This way you can sync your contacts on your phone to gmail and vise versa.

Then you set up your default email account with your Gmail account?

and now you get 2 notifications for all your gmail emails?

Yes, that's pretty much it, except that I can't recall setting up gmail as my default account anywhere. I should use the "Add account" option, shouldn't I?

what account do you have set up in the default emai account? is it the Gmail account or another account?

So that seems to be the issue. You have two instances of the mail account. 1 in Gmail (this automatically is set up when you set up your phone with a gmail account.) 2. in the default email app. simply delete the email account in the default email app and allow the Gmail app to be your primary email app this should stop the dual notifications

Yes, that seemed to solve it!! I cannot find anything that seems to imply that gmail is installed (separately) at all, though. However, when I recieve a message, there were two icons/notifications appearing at the top; one "envelope" and one "envelope" with a "M" inside. I suppose the latter was gmail. Anyway, I deleted the gmail account from what I suppose is the deafult account, and everything seemed to work fine. Now I need to see if syncing of mail and addresses will work.
But so far, I thank you for your helpfulness (and patience)! :)

Eh - one more thing, perhaps . . When I click the emai icon (an "envelope" with a @ on it) on my phone now, I'm prompted to configurate an email account. I.e. my emails and addresses are no longer there . . . .

Correct. They should be in the gmail app however. Look for the letter with an M on it that is the gmail app

Got it now. Deleted the default Messages icon/function, dragged gmail into its place, and now everything works perfect. For the first time in 4 years. (Yes, I guess I'm a little bit lazy.) Thanks a lot for helping me solve this. :)
