Help Messages in notifications

I just purchased a samsung epic 4G. I want to keep my messages private. They pop up in the status bar as a notification revealing half of the message to whomever is close enough to read it. It does the same thing with my IMs from yahoo & google and messages from facebook. It does this even when my phone is locked. I did turn of the notification for SMS, but realized that I'm not being notified at all when a text comes through. Is there a way to stop my messages from popping up in the status bar, but still have it alert me when I have a new IM or text?
 
If you go into the messaging app hit menu/settings and turn off notifications on the task bar. Unfortunately, I think this also turns off the notification sound, etc.

Perhaps Handcent or ChompSMS, two alternative messaging apps, have an option to turn it off?
 
use handcent sms from the market.

theres a setting called privacy mode under notifications.

Thanks I'll give it a try. Do you know of something that will stop my yahoo messages from appearing in the status bar. I turned off notifications for google talk, but there is not option for yahoo messenger only sound notification. The message still appears.
