Messaging app battery drain even after Hangouts as SMS default

Hey guys, so I recently got the hangouts update about a week ago. I've been using it as my default sms app. Now I would say I am a heavy texter; maybe 200-300 texts per day, depending on my workload. I even have my messaging apps notifications turned off in the settings however, I continually find that messaging is taking around 18-25% of my battery each day. Whereas my hangouts app is only taking about 12%. I don't even open my messaging app anymore so I don't know how I am getting drain from it. I've read that kit kat lets you decide which app sms comes through, and no I haven't updated to kit kat yet(no time, with final exams coming) is that why my messager app is still being used, as I'm still on 4.3? Even if this were true, I don't see how it is draining more than my hangouts app. Any advice from anyone on this issue?

If you've not updated to 4.4, it's still actually your messaging app that's doing the actual texting as opposed to hangouts.

Whilst it's not a 100% accurate description, think of hangouts as a fancy looking overlay to the stock messaging app.

From what I read, I think all that changes in 4.4 and third party apps will be the ones that handle messages.
Make sense?

Ok thanks for the reply. Guess I'll have to find some time to update to 4.4. Thanks for clearing that up for me.
