Help Messaging not limiting conversation size

In the stock messaging app there is an option to limit the number of messages per conversation. I have this checked and set the limit to 200. However, this isn't working. I have conversations that are well over that limit. I use Handcent as my default messaging app but my understanding was that it still relies on the stock app. I've tried disabling that option, closing the app, and then enabling it again, hoping to trigger the auto delete, but that hasn't worked.

Anyone else experience this? Any ideas how to get it to work properly? I'd prefer not to have to install yet another app just to delete messages. And deleting old messages one at a time is a pain.

Thanks.

Bump.

I'm using Handcent and the last week or so I've noticed that it runs very slowly so I went to the settings and set it so that each thread is limited to 100 messages. Once I did this nothing happened and I still have many threads well over that 100 message limit.

I have also set the limit in the stock messaging app, rebooted my phone, as well as downloaded Go SMS Pro and set the limit there but to no avail.

What do I need to do to delete these old messages? I know I can delete messages older than a certain date with a different app but I want to have the limit by conversation not time.

Any ideas?
