Help Messaging Problem

Recently switched over to the Note 3 from an iPhone. I'm having trouble receiving messages from people using iMessage/iPhones, especially in group messages - if I write to them individually, I'll get a response, but if it's in a group message the iMessage users' text never comes through.

Apparently I still register as an iMessage user to them, even though I've shut off iMessage on the old phone, unregistered my Apple products, and switched my Apple ID password.

Any advice?
