Root messed with keylayout (.KL) files now my hardkeys wont work

Motorola Triumph
CM7 android 2.3.7

i began this with the intention of mapping a volume key as a power button on my Motorola triumph as my power key has began to fail. i did successfully get it to work as intended, then i got curious....

i attempted to map the "search" touch key as my power button. in retrospect this was a foolish move because i do not fully understand what each .kl file does. i got the "volume up (key 115)" key to act as the new power key by replacing the entries in each file where i saw:

"key 115 VOLUME_UP WAKE_DROPPED"
to
"key 115 POWER WAKE"

that seemed to go as suspected, however when i did the same thing to all the "search (key 217)" entries

"key 217 SEARCH WAKE_DROPPED"
to
"key 217 POWER WAKE"

i overwrote the whole "keylayout" folder under "/system/usr/keylayout" (all .kl files present only edited)

after i rebooted i noticed that none of my hard keys worked at all. (vol. up/down, pwr, and the menu keys) i was a bit panicked as i had no way to navigate. i then installed "button savior" which acts as touch physical keys. i can navigate now, and i immediately tried restoring a backup i made of the whole "keylayout" folder.

upon restart i still have unresponsive hard keys after the ROM is booted. is there something i am missing? do i have to shut down a special way or re register the .KL files somehow?

i am really trying to avoid a reinstall of CM7 as i only made a backup of the fresh ROM

i moved you to the triumph root forum where folks who have your phone can help you out better.

now do you have recovery? did you make a nandriod backup? if not you can probably wipe and re-flash your rom. just remember to always make a nandroid backup before messing around with your phone....that way you can always nandroid restore back if you mess up.

yes i realized this too late... i have a backup i did with clockwork mod when i installed the ROM. trying to avoid reinstalling all my apps and settings

You dont have to reinstall all your apps. Your on cm7 right? All you have to do is:
1. Boot to recovery
2. Wipe system and cache (Do NOT wipe data!)
3.Reflash Rom
4. Flash corresponding Gapps
5. Roms like new, but with all your data.

5. Roms like new, but with all your data.

doesn't wiping system wipe data as well as the rom? if anything you should wipe dalvik cache, and cache and re-flash the rom. this way you will not loose data or your apps.

and now you know to make a nandroid backup before messing around with your phone like that.

No system and data are two different files. Any app you install will go to data/app( which is why you should NOT wipe data) and of course data for each app goes to data/data. Wiping system will get rid of any system files(including the one they screwed up) and reflashing will....well you get the idea. When you reflash you must flash gapps again also as those get pushed to system/app when flashed.

see i'm used htc phones. and when you wipe system you wipe out the rom which includes data. wiping only dalvik cache and cache is sufficient enough to re-flash the rom with no issues and not loos data.....good to know....thanx

Wiping DC and Cache is good, but you need to wipe system too. I know it formats it when you flash the rom, but i always do just in case.

im looking in "mounts and storage" within CWM. its got some options to format the cache, data, system, sdcard, sd-ext

is this where i should be for step 2?

then i'm assuming to flash (step 3/4)i would just need to install the zip files like i did when i first installed the ROM?

yes that is it.....just wipe cache and system and re-flash the rom. in the main menu there should be a "flash .zip from sd card"(or something to that affect) select that and then find the rom you are going to flash and select it.

OK i got my buttons back!

in CWM i went to "mounts and storage" and formatted both the cache and system

i then wiped the cache partition and cleared the dalvik cache, also the battery stats

after the wipe i reinstalled cm7 and the Google apps over my existing data.

all my settings and customizations were retained the only thing i had to do was re add my corporate account and add my gmail back to the mail app.

everything seems to be fixed thanks, both of you i really appreciate the guidance. i really enjoy working with smartphones it reminds me of when i got into fixing windows computers

NICE!!!!!
in cwm go to the advanced menu and select fix permission....hopefully that should work. if not then, you might loose your data. now do you have titanium backup(tp)? if not then i suggest that you do cuz it will backup your apps data. do not select system apps(they are in red) as they might conflict with other roms (but you will be just wiping data from the current rom so it might be ok for this one instance). i suggest forking up the money to get the pro key as well.
