Root metro lg connect 4g won't connect through adb

I just got the lg connect and I wanted to try out an early root. The last 4 phones I had wouldn't/couldn't get detected by my adb drivers. I can connect the lg to my computer and it pops up on my list of devices like any other phone. When I try and root it, it either stalls on the prompt. "killing adb server" and then nothing. I've installed the updates from the android sdk and dozens of other resources (including files from playfulgod and shabbypenguin)

are you on internet connection mode on the phone with usb debugging enabled, and have unknown sources checked in the applications menu of your settings?
