Root [MetroPCS/CDMA] cannot boot into rom or recovery

I have been flashing CM nightlies for around a month now. Today I tried reverting to a CM10 rom (not a backup) from 10.1 through goomanager. Also have TWRP 2.3.1.1 installed. Everything appeared to flash ok. I selected to wipe dalvik and used the older compatible gapps. I didn't do a full system wipe which I think is where I messed up. Now my phone just stops at the CM animation. It can be shut down if I hold the power button.

For some reason I have never been able to boot directly into recovery. I have tried pulling the battery, SD card, and holding vol up, home and power until S3 logo. Sometimes the phone just reboots once it gets to the logo when holding the buttons. I could always reboot to recovery from the rom with no problems though. I had tried reflashing TWRP before all of this happened thinking maybe something was wrong with the flash, but still could never get the phone to boot to recovery directly.

When I plug the phone to the PC during the CM animation, it does connect to the computer - however adb doesn't recognize it. It must be connected as charge only because it isn't loading as mass storage either.

Any ideas anyone?

I know of this blue writing that you speak of. However it only appears when I reboot to recovery from the rom. It has never once appeared for me while holding home, vol up and power at power on. I just tried it on my woman's stock S3 and it did boot with the blue text.

It's probably because your phone can't make it that far. In this case let the buttons go as soon as the samsung logo pops up. It usually takes a few tries.

The stock S3 I can get to default recovery the first time every time. Mine does boot past the samsung and s3 logos all the way to cm animation every time I turn it on. We both have tried booting to recovery many many times now releasing at different times and no luck any time.

Question.. on CM 10 and 10.1, does the volume adjustment work straight from install (when you press vol up does the volume turn up)? Mine never did on any build. The only thing both vol buttons did were turn on and off vibration when I held either one for like 3 seconds. On the stock phone it adjusts it every time you press the button. I don't remember if my vol buttons worked instantly when it was still stock..

That is strange. Yes the volume buttons work as they should on every cm roms that ive flashed so far. Never heard of this issue with anybody else either.

Can you at least get into download mode? Its with the volume down instead of volume up button. If you can get it into download mode you can restore it to stock. Look for the return to stock thread by shabbypenquin.

Ok problem solved - I have such an awesome girlfriend haha.

Turns out it was the physical buttons. She remembered that I couldn't adjust the volume with them, and searched online about the issue. It appears that it is common with the S3 versions. Funny how no one ever mentioned it here before.. (Guess no one else here has had this problem?) I called a cell phone repair shop - he was able to replace them today for $35 plus tax and it took him about 15 min. Phone boots to recovery and download menu easily now, and volume works in rom with the buttons.

Thanks for the help guys. Always appreciated.

I haven't had the boot issue, but I can't get the volume to work on my S3. Thanks for the info as to why!!! :)

Glad I could help somewhat on the forums. Let me suggest that you repair or replace the buttons as soon as you can. If you don't and flash roms regularly, all it takes is one bad flash and you have an expensive brick in your possession..
