Root [MetroPCS] [MOD] [Beta] SdCard Memory Hack

Yes, the phone is connected to the internet, and I downloaded your package directly on the phone. I am just trying to understand what happened. Sounds like the right thing to do is to really heed your advice, backup all that needs to be backed up, factory reset, follow your procedure, and then restore (at least .apk's). If that still does not work, then we can talk more... Thanks again!

yea its my end. The crew (PlayfulGod) is messing around on the server moving it from 1&1 i think to his dedicated server. So its all wanked up right now so the app will not work for a while. Im moving all the files to my server that hasnt came up to life yet.
http://www.pressy4pie.com but the dns hasnt been updated yet

OK, Thank you, pressy4pie for confirming that this is a server side problem- I was going nuts trying to figure out why the package is not even being unpacked, after taking a peek at logcat (pretty cool capability!).
I even tried to unzip it by hand, but it is still messed up.

I just checked, your server is still down...

Is there any way to grab the app from one of the phones that were succesfully converted a few days ago and drop it into this one and let it rip? How would I do that?

Hi pressi4pie- any news on an alternate location for the app or how to exttact it from a phone that has already been upgraded? Sure would be nice to finish the job with that 3rd handset!

> that should not be because of my mod. that means your cache is being formatted of every boot

Hi pressy4pie. Your hack is holding up great!
Like jr223, I'm also getting "Android is upgrading" at every boot. Do you have any pointers on what may be causing the cache (dalvik I presume??) to be formatted on every boot. I could live with it if I have to (about 5 minutes startup delay), but would rather find a fix. Any thoughts? THANKS.

I googled for the issue and didn't find much. Someone on some forum (can't find the URL now) thought it was a race condition, where the file system containing the dalvik cache is not mounted in time, and an "optimizing" sequence is triggered to rebuild the dalvik. Others suggested switching from CWM to another recovery, or uninstalling titanium backup. Haven't tried these suggestions yet -- thought I'd ask your opinion first.

Search for my thread on how to kill ota update forever.

I should have mentioned that I do already have FOTAkiller.apk in /system/app, and that I am _not_ getting update nags. The only thing I am getting is the "Android is Upgrading, Optimizing application <n> of 108" sequence at bootup. (I don't *think* that is related to an OTA upgrade attempt, although I could be wrong.)

This sounds like what I saw when I didn't factory reset when going from 12B to 10i. The phone had to go through and optimize all the apps to work with the different software. It's not looking to OTA update the phone. Have you tried a factory reset through CWM?

Hmmm... I thought I had done a factory reset through CWM as part of the SDcardHack install sequence. But now that I think about it... Perhaps that was only a factory reset through the Settings menu (Backup&Reset/Factory Data Reset). I think you are on to something... Perhaps I inadvertently missed a step, by doing the wrong type of "factory reset"!

I guess I'll try a CWM factory reset and try again. Will this require a re-install of the SdCardHack? Will I be able to safely restore apps and data from Titanium backup this time, since the latest backup was created with SDCard hack already in place?

sdcard hacks should stick.

Titanium backup is probably what the problem is. Try restoring them from the store. I know it'll clean slate each application, but I bet that's the issue, especially if the backups where done on a different firmware say 10i and now you're on 12b.

Edit: I may have read over your last post a little fast since you said the backups where done after Sdhacks was already installed. I'd still recommend restoring them from the store this time just to be sure. The message sounds like it thinks the apps where installed via a different firmware version. Install them fresh SHOULD resolve it.

Edit2: As a test you can factory reset but then don't restore anything. Do you still get that message when you reboot? If not, then just re install apps from the store.

I restored apps & data with TB without any problem, BUT backup must be done after install SdCard Memory Hack.

And don't back them up if it gives you the optimizing message. Restoring them will also restore the problem. Need it booting clean, then you can backup/restore.

OK, now I'm in the twilight zone. :-)

Using CWM recovery (as installed by F6Utilities2), I hit "wipe data/factory reset", and eventually rebooted it when the wipe was done.

Upon reboot, it once again did the Android is upgrading / Optimizing application <n> of 108 song and dance. And when it finally got booted, it was back to its normal self as though there had been no wipe -- SDcard hack still intact, and ALL APPS STILL INTACT.

With no re-installing, and certainly no recovery from backup, everything is still there.

I'm guessing this is because with the SD Hack, the CWM "wipe data / factory reset" is de-fanged, because it's only wiping the _normal_ data location, not the new ext4-partition-based one. Perhaps I need to also format the sdcard ext4 partition?? Or to somehow mount it under CWM before I hit "wipe data / factory reset"?

weird. I agree sounds like the factory wipe didn't do anything. Try re-formatting. (once again i'll voice backup first)

This is a great hack, but sincerely needs an OC due to slow-down of writing to sd card.

This is so much slower and less responsive than with freedom kernel installed.

If you ever do a final version, I beg you to do it with an OC!

Thanks!

What class sd card you running? I have a class 2 and it's really slow. Got a class 10 coming next week that should make it way better.

Overclocking wouldn't really help the SD hack. You just need a fast class 10 SD card. In other words, the speed of the SD hack is determined by how fast your SD card is (read/write speed).

I do not know what did wrong some days ago...
Everything works perfect, all apps, ... then "...gapps.com stopped" then everything fails... turn off phone, on again, all working perfect again, but just a while, sometimes works ok a few mins or several hours.

I tried all this:
wipe cache & dalvik
enabled usb debugging
changed opensource superuser by su
tried several busybox versions
changed stock launcher by nova
updated all apps

This is my environment: LGMS50010i, 32GB class 10, SdCard Memory Hack (4GB internal ext4 with 2.96 available & 26GB external FAT32 with 12.7 available), Voltage Control (384-972, cfq, interactive), AdAway, ...

Take lot of time start from zero again but my only concern is I do not know what did wrong, so will do it again probably.

Thanks in advance.

Seemed to be super snappy with the original hack + Freedom kernel...I would think it would help some, but maybe not so much with this one?

Are system files still running on the true internal memory with this hack? Doesn't feel like it.

And btw...I just looked and trickster mod shows up to 1600 mhz can be selected as OC. Why? I thought this was stock 1.2ghz

Is this false info?

I am on 12b fresh install.

Not to downplay your work OP, but after reading a few articles and threads on this subject, it appeared like you could copy the /data/* to the external partition and bind mount the external partition as /data to make it appear as the internal storage (I have not actually tried this). I am just wondering if your hack is on the same lines or involves something more sophisticated than this. Also, why does it require a different kernel and recovery and also require a factory reset? Would really appreciate your response, since I try to understand what and why I am following some instructions (and try to learn something new while following them).

I am also getting slow down on my 64gb sandisk microsdxc card. Do you guys think that the 32GB class 4 card might be better? Reason I ask is I had a nook color that you could use for OS and it was tested that the class 4 was faster because of the way it wrote to the disk.

Its not the size that matters, its the speed class. Ideally you would want the fastest card you could find. I know my speed class 2 card isnt enough. A class 4 would be twice as fast but you may still experiance stutters as it writes to the card. Id recommend getting a speed class 10 card or any uhs class card (3 being the best available).

Lol@ 13onk@ size doesn't matter bahaha that's not what she said. Okay in all seriousness, I second the uhs card suggestion, my phone dragged so bad with this installed, an almost completely froze during app updates. My class 2 definitely did not cut it.
