Root [MetroPCS & T-Mobile] [TIP] Disable OTA Update notification.

I don't know why you guys don't accept the update

I have read that if you take the update, then you can no longer root with Motochopper. I don't want to take any chance of loosing root. I consider root to be essential for this phone because it allows you to use tools like Link2sd and FolderMount to move apps and data from the limited internal memory to the SD card.

Do you guys have CWM installed?
Indeed the OTA update Bricked my phone, but CWM was retained throughout the incident, so in theory I'd be able to just flash UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.80.zip after the update without the need for motochopper.
The OTA update never successfully flashed tho, so I can't verify...

Also, I just started using the '11extsd2internalsd' script and it seems to be working pretty well so far.

Wierd, same issue here....Ran Disable Service app and found that SystemUpdateService had been re-enabled again.

The culprit seems to be Google Play Services. Version 4.4 has been rolling out this month... Google automatically pushes out updates to Google Play Services, so rolling back to an older version is only temporary.

Making GooglePlayServices 4.3 a System App seems to prevent it from Automatically updating to v4.4 in the background. (at least for now)
I originally had v2.0.12 as the System App, and tried to just manually install v4.3 apk on top of it, but it automatically updated to 4.4 pretty quickly without prompting shortly after.

Here's what works for now (Root required)
In system settings-apps-Downloaded Apps;
Uninstall Updates to GooglePlayServices, then go to System Apps-GooglePlayServices, Clear Data/Cache, Uncheck Show Notifications, and Force Stop (Don't Disable).
Using RootBrowser;
Delete System/App/GmsCore.apk. (and GmsCore.odex if exists)
Find 'google_play_services_4.3.23_1069729-036.apk', rename it GmsCore.apk, and replace the original apk in System/App.
Make sure you set the correct permissions to the GmsCore.apk.
Reboot, Set up DisableServices like usual.

I updated and installed a few Apps with PlayStore, and verified that GooglePlayServices is still at v4.3. DisableServices settings have also retained after several reboots.
Phone has been up for a few hours and so far, no OTA Update Notifications :)

I have not verified the SystemTuner method yet, but I'm assuming with GooglePlayServices v4.3 retained, it 'should' work as well.

No dice. I tried these steps, but after the reboot, I got a notification every few seconds that said "Google Play Services has stopped." Fortunately I was able to get into Root Browser and undo what I'd done... but I'm still having to kill processes and manually delete that damn .zip file after every reboot!

Did you also delete the GmsCore.ODEX file as well from System/App?
I forgot to mention I'm using a Deodexed ROM, so I had no GmsCore.odex file to delete in System/App, but if you have it, remove the odex file as well.

Make sure you uninstall the GooglePlayServices from Updates section, then go to the SystemSettings-Apps-and Clear the Cache/Data from GooglePlayServices after.
While you're there, ResetAppPreferences may help as well, but I didn't need to do it.

Another thing I forgot to mention, you should always backup any APK/ODEX files you are deleting from System/App just in case...

This seems to have worked for me too. I have Google Play Services 4.3.25 installed as a system app. It has not been automatically updated to version 4.4, nor have I gotten any more update notifications since I rolled back to version 4.3 several weeks ago.

Instead of using the manual process that lgoptimusv5 described, I used an app called System App Manager to convert Google Play Services to a system app. This makes it very easy.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.flaki.systemappmanager

The process should go something like this:

1) Download and install System App Manager from the play store.

2) Find and download the version of Google Play Services that you want. Here is a link to 4.3.25:
Downloads - Google Play Services - Google Play Services

3) Go into the app manager in your Android system settings. Uninstall any updates to Google Play Services. Wipe cache and data.

4) Install the version of Google Play Services that you downloaded in step 2.

5) Run System App Manager. Tap "Filter" near the top until is shows ">Updated<". You should see Google Play Services in the list. Tap on it, select Manage, then select Convert.

6) Reboot phone when conversion is done.

7) Repeat instructions in first post to disable SystemUpdateService in Google Services Framework.

It was only happening maybe once a week. Then it went to at least once a day. Between the hours of 5 am and 8 pm today, I have hit the "install later" button about 30 times. It has become a perpetual nag all day, every day. I was a little scared to try the previous way, but using the Sys App Mgr seems to have worked. And since my second reboot, about an hour ago, I haven't seen the notification, which is an awesome sign.

Keeping fingers crossed.

Ok, I came back. It has been close to three hours now,
and no notifications to swipe away.

One very weird thing... since getting this phone, knowing it was marketed as a 4g phone, I've never been in an area that would enable the 4g... suddenly I'm on 4g now. Strange that connectivity would be linked to Google Play Services... but I have version 2.0.12 now.

I downloaded the linked apk to my phone but no installer came up or anything, and I didn't know what to do, so I went into System App Mgr and converted the factory version to system app. Now... I have no ota nags, and seem to be on a steady 4g for the first time since I bought this phone.

Is Google Play going to force update me next time I try to update an app, now that I'm back to factory version? I did find the apk file for yours with root app delete, and found option to install. Now if I install it (and do I need this version in your link?), will I have to do the System App Mgr step again?

Once I saw the install option I almost went on with it, but damn... 4g and no updates... if it can STAY this way I'm happy, unless I'm in for a forced update...

Ok, another update... once I had Google Play Services rolled back to factory version (2.0.12), my 4g re-enabled and I have had no OTA update nags... none since then... but the Play Store icon was gone, and apparently the app with it. So I went back and installed your version 4.3.25... and rebooted, converted to system app, rebooted again, still NO PLAY STORE... system settings show Play Store as installed, but can't be found in app drawer... so I went online and found an apk file for Play Store 4.3.10 (could not find one for 4.3.25), it crashed every time I opened it... so I went into System App Mgr and converted Play Store to system app as well... rebooted, and an update to Play Store automatically loaded, and now everything is back to normal... I think... my Play Store has been auto updated to version 4.9.13, working fine, and Google Play Services is version 4.3.25... 4g is still working, and no OTA update nagging... I got there, via a crooked path, but I got there...

Live Long and Prosper.

Hey spocko , is your fix still working? I'm thinking about re-doing it, but just wanted to know if you are getting any notifications to update Google Play Services.

It's been about a month now, and still no system update notification, at least not the one to update to the new Android version, but today I kept getting "triangle" notifications saying Google Play Services (4.3.25) needs to update.

Sorry for the slow reply, I had missed your post.

My solution may or may not work for you, depending on what apps you have installed. Some apps require newer versions of Google Play Services. For example, if you update the Youtube app to the latest version, then it also wants to update Google Play Services. If Google Play Services gets updated, then the software update notifications start happening again. My current solution is just use an older version of Youtube, and don't update it. That's the only app I've had trouble with, but I also don't use most of the other Google apps, so YMMV.

I suspect that there must be a more permanent fix to this issue, but unfortunately I don't know what it is.

Edit: @dogboy322;
Check out this thread. This may be the answer to a more permanent fix. Haven't tried it yet myself, but will when I get time.

Edit2:
I can confirm that FOTAKill works when installed as described in that thread. Yippee, no more need to worry about disabling services, etc.
