Help MHL 2.0 on Verizon S4

Therewolf

Lurker
Hey, was hoping someone has had the same issue as me and could help me out. I recently picked up the official Samsung MHL 2.0 Adapter, which is supposed to work with the S4 without an external power source while connecting to a HDTV. The adapter works just fine if I DO connect the power source, but does not work at all if I do not. Is there a setting or something I need to adjust? It seems everyone else is just plugging it in and it is working...
Thanks for the help in advance.

I just got one (2.0) and it works great without power. In fact, mine would NOT work with the power plugged in. Maybe they sent you the old adapter.

Still can't get the HDMI adapter to work without power. Called Samsung, they have no idea what I am talking about. The tech support guy read me my own instruction manual and said that I have to have the USB charger plugged into the adapter for it to function. I think he is wrong.
As far as I know, everyone with an S4 is just plugging the thing in and it is working, so I have no idea what I am doing wrong, and cannot seem to find help anywhere. It is a Verizon phone, and the samsung mhl 2.0 11 pin adapter. If anyone even knows a place I can go to figure this out it would be appreciated.
Thanks again.

Yes you shouldnt need the power cable. Where did you purchase the adapter? I only ask because it could be a bootleg. What hz does it show when working? 60?

Haven't tried it with the s4, but my official Samsung adapter needed power to work with my note 2....is the s4 different?

Works for me with USB plugged or unplugged. I am using the same red cable from Amazon that I got for the S3 but did NOT work if the data radio was on. The video would go off and on every few seconds unless the data radio was turned off.

Works great though on the S4 with data radio on, but got to wonder how good the battery life would be. Not seeing any charge or trickle charge when plugged into USB. Seems using data and outputting to a bigger display is not battery friendly.

Maybe I'm not seeing it, but I don't get how it's such a big deal to just plug in the power cord.

Well some peoples set ups have it where the wall outlet might not be as easy to get to (mine is a pain and with a bad back its no fun bending over), the power cord wont reach to the plug, and if you pay for something that says you get a certain feature, dont you think you should get that?

I have plugged in the usb for the S4 and notice no charge taking place. At least mhl works MUCH better than the S3 did.

It was very lame not being able to use data radios with the S3 while using hml.
