How do I get my HTC Incredible to recognize when a microphone is installed, it only recognizes it as earphones, so it doesn't record the audio. Thanks!

Right, you need a TRRS connector to get at the mic input. The same kind of connector that headsets use.

Depending on what kind of mic you are using, you might use a cable like this one, the yellow wire being the mic input, the white being the left audio out, and the red being the right audio out.
