Wow, no posts about it? If it were Apple showing off a new product, this place would be crazy with posts. Anyone think its going to be any good? I doubt it. I hope cameras were rolling at the unveiling today, they had an epic fail. They demo model froze (A windows device freezing? never heard of that) and they had to get another one to continue :p

Microsoft finally Surfaces in tablet market - latimes.com

product is dead in the water unless Microsoft can clearly explain the difference between RT (ARM) and PRO (x86).

There is a lot of confusion on the internet and in general about RT.

Windows 8 RT will NOT run legacy x86 apps. There will be no ported desktop apps. They must be sold through the MS store. This is Microsoft's official statement but the message is not clear to the end consumer.

Consumers will be in a big bag of hurt when they spend $600;thinking they can install Firefox and Photoshop.

Microsoft needs to clear the consumer confusion already erupting.

Impressed by the same !
But i doubt those boxes will intrest for ever !! i mean boxes here , boxes there, boxes boxes everywhere :D

Btw,
a much clear picture between the rt and pro versions and the over confusion is better explained at engadget !

microsoft is to late, Its Android V Apple.

unless they make some secure business only targted device like the blackberry was at first.

Apart from the name (think all the good ones had gone by the time MS got their act together), it looks very promising.

How long until the ARM version is hacked and Android is loaded onto it?

Microsoft has always had a knac for coming to a party late however they have always been able grab a good chunk of the market after they have entered it. Personally I think Microsoft intentionally comes to a party late that way they get a great sneak peak at the competition and that gives them an edge to give people what they feel the others lack. I've seen Microsoft do this a few times over the past. I think if the tablet is automatically recognized by Windows and it seamlessly integrates with its Desktop cousin then I think Microsoft will get a very big chunk of this market as well. I may not care for Microsoft as a Company nor do I care for Windows however there are Millions who do and plenty of them will be willing to give up their iPads and Driod tablets for a tablet that will work with the desktop seamlessly.

I remember all the hype surrounding the Zune. For some reason, I'm expecting the same...

Problem MS had with the Zune is they marketed it wrong. It was a great player however it was to appleish. Not really givin us much choice to choose from.

I dunno if that's the only thing that plagued it. I remember when everyone's Zune was crapping out on a certain date because of some poorly written code IIRC.

No that is what Google is doing, coming out with a quade core tablet for a beyond low price to steal market share, MS isn't doing any of that. They aren't even giving it the hard press, as they only expect sale from the hard core fan boys and don't expect to steal anyones sale.

People didn't think that Microsoft was going to kill Netscape however they did. Problem is again if it benifits the user and is easy enough for the user then it will be successful.

absolutely but thats Microsoft rushing to put something out to compete against the iPod. I loved my zune it was very simple and easy however it had faults. Microsoft doesn't really care though they get a tax break for the loss. but again to applish with the zune market why not be open for any market? short sightedness will screw you every time.

your probably using FireFox right now, whic his just netscape by proxy, it never went away, just was pulled back and refined into a new product.

Google is pulling a gen 1 Xbox scam to grab share, MS is not.

Yes I'm aware of where FireFox orgins come from. I was also surprised to learn that AOL who bought out netscape didn't use it. But MS bullying has no boundaries.

As far as grabbing shares they all know the only way to keep up with the big boys is to play like the big boys. thats why the other company runs to court. Girls were never ready for big boy games :p

Whatever the case with Microsoft, there really isn't any strong competition for the ipad anyways, so the Surface looks as promising as any tablet being released at the moment. Difference may be, that it seems like MS really took their time with this one and didn't rush a bumm product out as soon as they could.

Hence goes back to my original statement of Microsoft may be late but never out. Microsoft will make money bottom line

I dunno, I think MSFT may be onto something with the Surface Tablet. It's a good looking device, and if Metro stands up as a robust scalable UI then it may actually be on it's own in defining a new category (as a laptop replacement).

The trouble with all tablets today (including the iPad) is that while they are great content consumption devices, they are not that great for content creation. There are a variety of reasons for this - mostly to do with lackluster processors and poor input. MSFT may have solved both with the Surface. That keyboard cover looks pretty amazing (it looks like as much R&D went into the keyboard as did the actual tablet).

I applaud Microsoft for doing this. It's a shame that they took so long to do it. I know they were relying on an OEM partner network to build tablet devices - but none of them really stepped up - and while they were waiting they lost a lot of ground.

The make or break for the Surface will be in Microsoft's ability to market it. Hopefully they learned the lot about that from Zune (I still have a Zune and have always preferred it over my iDevice - more intuitive, easier to use, more control, etc - but MSFT really didn't seem to have a clue in how to market it).

LIke the Ngauge that was well ahead of its time, they didn't markt it right. They only sold it as a game device but it was also a cell phone.

it was a Sony Experia, just 10-15 years ahead of the market.

They didn't design it quite right either, holding something that looked like a taco to my ear to make phone calls, never quite appealed to me. I did see people using them, usually teenagers. Unlike the Zune, I never saw one of them at all, not anywhere.

To be frank, I really think that Microsoft is going to have an uphill struggle with the Surface tablet. At the moment I see a market almost totally dominated by low cost Android devices, along with some iPads. How are they going to market it, brand recognition, using the Microsoft and Windows names? From what I've seen so far, Microsoft and Nokia haven't been shaping to well trying to sell Windows Phones.
