Accessories MicroUSB - USB cable info

I need a MicroUSB - USB 2.0 cable to charge/swap data - just like the one that comes with the EVO from the factory.

Is there a specific type of cable I need to get or are they all the same as long as the ends are correct: MicroUSB - USB ?

They all seem to say "DATA CABLE" and want to make sure they all charge and swap data. I have one that I bought but it definitely is doing something weird: (1) when plugged into the wall charger, it rotates my screen even though I have it set NOT to rotate (2) it doesn't charge the phone when plugged into the wall charger 100% of the time like the OEM cable - I dont know what makes it charge and what makes it NOT charge (3) when I plug it into the PC USB, it does not bring up the pop-up screen that asks "Charge Only", HTC SYNC, USB DISk, etc". So this cable I have is definitely NOT the same as the OEM cable even though they both have the same MicroUSB - USB ends.
 
Sounds like a bad cable....maybe one of the pins isn't making contact.

All usb cables are the same. I have and use about 5 different cables that came with other electronics that work fine with my phone.

I think you might be right. I asked one of the sellers on ebay and he said he could not guarantee that the cable would work with all devices that has the MicroUSB-USB fittings. He said that the cables with the same fittings can be made differently inside - some to charge...others to transmit data...and others that can do both. And even if I buy one that can do both, I'm not even sure if they will work with the EVO 100% of the time.

I figured it's only $1 or $2.,.... if it doesnt work, Im just wasting time.

I could not get the micro cable I bought to work for anything other then charging. No sync. Then I noticed in microscopic letters on the cable:

"Micro USB For Charging Only Made in China"

It looks just like a normal cable. So I ordered this one on amazon that says htc evo data cable:

Under $2.00 and free shipping. It has not arrived yet.

You're right... there are some that are better quality than others, but for our use, it doesn't matter much.

Didn't know there was a charging only cable... sorry. That could have been the issue.

I have a dozen usb cables and adapters and have used them for my phones, cameras and other usb devices without an issue. Every Time I get a new device I save the cable. At this point it's easier for me just to get couplers or adapters.

Try Monoprice.com. I got so sick of the Best Buy prices and found these guys for HDMI cables for My TV. I was just looking at a 6ft cable for the car so I could run it under the dash for charging. BB is $29 Mono was $3. and you can get what ever grade you want.
