Mini Review: SGP Steinheil Oleophobic Screen Protector

I recently received the Steinheil Oleophobic screen protector and gave it a run. The package contains two screen protectors, 4 small stickers for "removing dust," a squeegee, and a small swatch of silky cloth for cleaning the screen.

For those of you unfamiliar with this brand and model, it is a dry application, with very minimal adhesive. Once installed, the film is glossy to the touch and glass-like. It does not exhibit the tacky feel or orange-peel surface like wet application protectors.

Because of the nature of the adhesive, the protector does not cover the entire glass. If it is centered perfectly, it sits about 2.5 mm off the edge of the glass on all sides. I heard in another video review that the reason is because the glass on the GNEX actually curves downward near the edges, and the film will not stay put if it rests on that part. If you want full coverage, go with wet application.

In the end, I took the protector off. It was great in nearly every regard: screen clarity and quality, feel, utility, etc. The only reason I took it off is because its footprint is smaller than the face of the phone (as noted above) and because the film is thick, the border it creates is extremely noticeable. It looks downright ugly. It took away so much from the simple elegance of the phone, that I had to take it off.
