Root Minimalist Root N8013: Recommendations?

PeteCress

I've read the sticky guide, but don't feel comfortable with my lack of knowledge.

Flash count? Should I care?

What I am looking for is Root access just to be able to run certain apps that require root. i.e. no intention of using another ROM.

Can somebody suggest something that meets above criteria and can be easily undone without leaving any telltale traces - as would be needed in event of a warranty claim?

I rooted my N7000 using procedure#1 at http://tinyurl.com/at84zrv (i.e. UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.25.zip) and that seemed to be exactly what I was looking for.

But for the Note 10.1?

I just did this on Friday, so its fresh in my mind.

Try this guide (post #2): [RECOVERY][RootGuide][ALL NOTE 10.1]Official CWM Recovery Touch & Non-Touch 6.0.3.6 - xda-developers

The links to the files are at the top of post #2. You'll need to install the Samsung drivers, download SuperSU and grab the Odin version of CWM touch recovery from the first post. Connect your tablet to your PC and copy SuperSU to your internal sdcard. You'll flash that after booting into CWM, when finished with Odin (using the guide). Don't use TWRP as it still has touch issues and you won't be happy. Now you can start the Odin process in the guide.

BTW, there's another guide that has a different CWM recovery, but as soon as you boot into Android, it defaults back to the stock recovery. I had a count of 6 before it worked. You'd have to uncheck "reboot" in Odin and boot directly into recovery (power + right volume key) right after flashing.

You can return your count back to one, via triangle-away: [2013.10.04][ROOT] TriangleAway v3.10 - xda-developers

To boot into recovery, use the power and right-side of the volume button. Power and left-side, will boot you into Odin mode.

In step #11, he says "put the ***.tar.md5 (Recovery File) to PDA".

I'm guessing he wants me to check Odin's PDA option, click the PDA button, and navigate to whereever some sort of ***.tar.md5 file is.

But I can't find anything with a .MD5 suffix in the files he says to download.

There's a recovery.img file in N8013-CWM-Touch-6.0.3.6-CWM.zip, but Odin is not buying it when I try to navigate to it because of the .ZIP suffix (the Common File Dialog that pops is filtering for .tar, .md5, and .smd).

Reading elsewhere, I get the idea that I am supposed to somehow convert that recovery.img to a tar.md5 file

Do you recall what you did?

Finally, the .img suffix has me a little spun up. Any idea what it's role is in the process?

What kind of image are they talking about? I certainly don't want to re-image my tablet - just gain root access.

I extracted the contents of the file to a folder on my desktop and Odin, the recovery and root md5 files were in the folder.
When I went to the linked page, I downloaded the first "8013" file I found.

Bad Idea.

I'm guessing that the proper one to download is Stock Recoverys for Rollback | N8000/N8010/N8013 (Mirror)

But when I get to step 17, the "Android system recovery <3e>" menu contains no option called "install zip from sd-card". I see three variations of "apply update...", but that's as close as it gets.

I'm guessing that "apply update from external storage" is a reasonable choice and, step #1 to the contrary, I need to move SuperSU.zip from the internal SD Card to the external card.

Tried that route...

Oops!

-- Install /sdcard ...
Finding update package...

Verifying update package...

E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed

Actually, the stuff in Orange was in Yellow on the tablet - but Yellow was not legible on my PC monitor.

Downloaded SuperSU-v1.65.zip again, re-copied it to the external SD card, re-ran the install... but no change.

Assuming there's something wrong with the SD card, I guess I'm back to figuring out where to put the file on the internal SD so that it is visible to the "install zip from cache" option.

Edit 2013 10-23 14:26:

Googling "signature verification failed" I'm seeing a lot of hits around SuperSU.

Prevailing advice seems tb to disable signature checking in the flash utility - but on my tab there is no such option..... which leads me to wonder if part of this process is installing some sort of customized flash utility ("CWM"?) and that maybe I am in the stock utility by mistake.

When I boot via VolumeUP/Power==>VolumeUP, the screen says Android system recovery <3e> and, down below in Yellow, it says:

# MANUAL MODE #
-- Appling Multi-CSC...
Applied the CSC-code : XAR
Sucessfully applied multi-CSC

I gave up on that route and (perhaps foolishly.... ) used this one: How to Root Galaxy Note 10.1 (Wi-Fi) N8010/N8013 on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean Firmware - Honai of Android

It *did* have a thread dedicated to in in the developer's forum... so maybe I wasn't *too* foolish.

Nice clean process: Fire up ODIN, load the .MD5, re-boot into flash mode, and it's done.
