Missing notifications while phone sleeps?

Is it just me or does it seem like your phone misses more than just an occasional notification for things like google voice, gmail or various small items while the phone is asleep? For some reason my phone will be asleep for just a short time, then I click to wake it up and my notification shows up then, but if I hadnt woke the phone up it wouldnt alert me even though its set to check and notify. This happening to anyone else?

two tests i just tried, opened google voice at 9:13 and refreshed it, then closed it and had my girlfriend send me a message through google voice. wait until 9:21 and the phone still hasnt given me a notification even though its supposed to check every 5 minutes. i click the power button and the notification arrives within a couple seconds.

so i open the app again refresh and have her send me another text at 9:23 and now ill wait a little longer, maybe 10 minutes to see if i get notified while the phone is sleeping.

A better way to get GV texts is to go into your settings from the webpage and have it send you an email to your gmail account when new texts arrive. That's better than having GV check every 5 minutes since gmail is push and you'll get a notification within a minute or so, usually.

Are you using 3G or Wifi? If you're using wifi, make sure your wifi isn't going to sleep. You can check this by going to: Menu -> Settings -> Wireless controls -> Wifi settings -> Menu (again) -> Advanced -> Wi-fi Sleep Policy
It is set to "When screen turns off" by default.

If you're using 3G, make sure your 3G is set to "Enable always-on mobile". That can be found at Menu -> Settings -> Mobile Network Settings.

i do have wifi checked as always on and half the reason i got an android phone is because i didnt want to have to push my gv sms to gmail or a regular sms plan. i had already been using it via this method with my iphone.

i finally got the notification 10 minutes later, and there were 2 waiting instead of just the one from her.

im doing another test now with mobile network always on enabled, she sent the text at 9:42 right after i refreshed and closed gv, now ill see how long it takes to get this one.

Also another thing about these notifications. They don't ring every time you get a new one. You'll be notified of the first new one, and if you don't check it or don't open gmail, then subsequent emails or texts won't alert you.

And if your gmail or Google Voice app is open and they intercept the message, you won't get an alert in the notifications bar either.

Sucks. I would rather have each and every email alert me as it arrives, but some people like it the way it is...so they don't constantly keep getting new alerts.
