Root MIUI and CM

Android Expert
I'm a noob when it comes rooting and the terminology, I have tried looking it up myslef but cannot find the answer I am looking for, so I thought I would ask the experts of rooting.

What is the diference between MIUI and CyanogenMod? is one better than the other? I have seen that there are ICS roms for both MIUI and CM but I am confused on what the difference between the two actually is.
Then there is also another rom FroyoCream .. is that like an extension mod of froyo or?
Just getting into rooting and trying to get some knowlege.

Can anyone clear help clear this up for me?

Thank you.

This is a list of all the current ROMs with the version of android they are running:
MIUI and CM7 are based off the same android OS base. CyanogenMod is very close to vanilla android OS (more so than many device's stock ROMs). MIUI has made a lot of changes (no app drawer, all kinds of different system apps). They basically run the same OS, but the apps (system ones) are different and they look very different. Froyocream is a themed 2.2 ROM.

Thank you, so if I read this correctly, CM is more like the actual version of android that you are installing ie CM9 is the closest to 4.0 you will get besides actually having ICS from the factory, and MIUI is a modded version of it, and the last one was kinda my guess, you are still using 2.2, just themed to match the look and feel of, in this case, ICS.

Thank you again

Pretty much. CyanogenMod has changes from the android source as well (usually tweaks and such, as well as the launcher). Most phones from the factory will have some sort of manufacturer addition (TouchWiz, MotoBlur, Sense, etc.) So that can further add to the confusion, but the Triumph does not have that. Although it does come with vendor bloatware.

It is probably a bit more complicated than how I described it, but it should be close enough for you to start. One of the great things about android is the choices you have, what ROM to use is one of those great choices. Try them out and see what you like best! :D

haha I am looking forward to the camera fix on CM9, once they get the camera working I will be happily rooting my phone for the first time :D I was just confused on what the exact difference was. And now you have pretty much cleared it up for me
Thank you again haha Cant wait to get CM9 on my Triumph :D

While you wait for CM9, I would jump on CM7 without hesitation! It's an awesome ROM that makes the stock ROM look and feel like crap. I'm the same way though with CM9....as soon as the camera issue gets resolved, I'm swapping over to it from CM7.

I have definitely given thought into it, about switching over to cm7 but the reason I an feeling like im not going to, just because of the hassle of updating contacts from sd card and I have a few texting threads saved on my sd card as well. And with the way it seems, if I were to go with CM7 right now, the way it looks is that they are soon ready with the camera fix and then I'd need to do it all over again. haha I still am temped to do it.. and I never really looked to far into it, did rooting it solve slow gps?

You shouldn't need to update your contacts from the sdcard. As long as you have contacts synced with your Google account, they'll always be automatically downloaded back onto your phone as soon as you sign into your Google account on your phone.

Edit: Heck, I even have some of my phone settings backed up to my Google account, such as my saved wifi networks, so that when I sign into my phone after a clean wipe, it automatically brings all of those settings back so I don't have to keep retyping all of that in.

You know your contacts are saved to your google account (or they can be) so you don't have to hassle with that?

haha I did not know that actually! You learn something everyday! And I thought I knew my android

and will that keep all information like facebook? probably dumb question haha

No it won't keep your facebook login info. But facebook takes care of the rest once you login. You do have to have "sync contacts" enabled for what I said to work, but I think it is by default (might be wrong there).

by facebook info, i meant linking contacts to their profile if you currently have that, or does it just save their numbers thats what I was trying to get at

Linking Facebook Contacts to your Google Contacts is done from the Facebook app itself, so you needn't worry about that if you decide to jump on the CM7 bandwagon :)

well now the only thing that i see as a hassle is getting a few threads transferred when i wipe it, but I guess it would be good practice for when ics is complete! :D I'll just wait til the person im texting goes to bed haha

You convinced me, way to go guys!

Just one thing. If you want to keep your texts. Use sms backup and restore free from the market and back up. Then you can restore them all when you get into the new rom.

Yes, I do this everytime I switch ROMs. It is very nice if you don't want to use a 3rd party messaging app, but want to be able to back them all up.

No, not yet. I think it is something they are working on. You could always save the pics on the SD card though.

I did it haha only thing I miss from my old set up is go fx launcher pro.. but specifically the ability to make folders in the app drawer for apps, is there an app for that only that is good?
thanks all!
