If I was to get a mobile broadband dongle, would it work through an OTG cable so I could put my N7 online via that way when out and about?

Very unlikely as those dongles usually need drivers and software to work. They establish a VPN session over the device similar to how a DSL connection works (at the modem level) only the dongle doesn't do things like sessioning and tunnel establishment. The drivers and software the dongle ships with take care of that usually. So in short, unless you find a dongle that behaves very much like an Ethernet port only and doesn't require ANY software, it will not work unless they provide an Android app for handling the missing pieces. And I've never heard of such a device.

I have an On-The-Go internet access. It's what they call a hotspot, were you can carry it with you and connect up to 8 devices through wifi. It runs on USB or the built-in battery.

I use it as my main home internet connection also. I don't really need super duper speeds.

Verizon has a device called a MiFi that is very similar. I'm sure AT&T, T-Mo, and Sprint/Nextel/MetroPCS have similar devices. Samsung makes a great one that works on Verizon's LTE and 3G networks - I've been using that off and on since I got it at Google IO 2012... can't recommend it highly enough.

Yes the device will support a Broadband connection over the OTG, but some hacking is required, I am running it right now, it is my next project as soon as i can get the microSD to Micro USB adapte project of the ground.

Most people use their phone or a dedicated Hotspot device as broadband, but sometime it is nice to have a small USB device that can do the same.
