Mobile Hot Spot

I bought a Kindle Fire (there's a separate forum for that discussion). It being a wireless-only device, and me wanting to use it wherever/whenever I want, the logical thing to do would be to utilize the 'mobile hot spot' feature of the DInc2. This would cost an additional $20 a month for 2 gigabytes if I were to do it legitimately through VZW (although I average close to 2 gigs a month using just my DInc2 alone).

I haven't rooted my DInc, because I haven't found the need to. On these forums, I've heard that people who root their devices and enable the hot spot invariably get busted by VZW and end up having to pay for the feature.

I dropped in a VZW store today and spoke to a (surprisingly) knowledgeable salesperson, who told me that VZW has some kind of deal going on where they're offering double usage for the same money (in other words, 4 gigs a month for $20), and that when this promotion ends, you'll be grandfathered into that rate indefinitely.

Now I wondering: 1) Is it absolutely certain that I can't get away with enabling the hot spot feature on my own, 2) is it worth the extra 20 bucks a month get to get to use my Fire away from home?

Can any of you wise DINC2 users offer me any thoughts/insights? Thank you in advance.

I used the above mentioned method before root was available and have used barnacle and pdanet both since then. I have never heard a peep from vz. I too am on the unlimited data plan.
I will not pay for "more" data use when my contract is for unlimited data. My phone is a tool I purchased. I can use it how I want. I also purchased unlimited data. I will use that how I want too.

If I let vz tell me I can't tether with my phone, next they'll tell me I can't root without penalties (beyond voiding my warranty), and then they'll tell me I can only take 20 pictures per month without paying extra.
Then they'll tax my damn toilet paper use!
NEVER GIVE IN TO THOSE BASTARDS!
:D

Rev, you really need to learn to express your true feelings. Holding it all in isn't good for you.

Yes, I wish we could have better pricing models instead of the nit-picking they do now. Regarding your last comment I say don't give them any ideas LOL

I just tried it - when I enter ##778 and press Call, I get "Your call cannot I'm trying the first step, and I'm getting the "Welcome to Verizon Wireless. Your call cannot be completed as dialed..."

Oops - that came out all garbled because I was in a hurry to run out. What I meant was when I tried to enter ##778 and press Call, I got ""Welcome to Verizon Wireless. Your call cannot be completed as dialed..."
