Root Mobile Hotspot

Lurker
Hello.

I would like some advice on getting my mobile hotspot up and running. We recently moved into a new place and want to nix the hi speed Internet for a while.

I have access to a laptop and some inconvenient access to wifi.

What steps should I take to go from point A (a completely stock evo V) to point B (an evo V with mobile hotspot enabled)?

I would also like the ability to turn off the soft button lights and camera sound if possible, along with getting rid of the Virgin Mobile boot jingle.

1) Make sure Virgin Mobile allows tethering. Some carriers will terminate your account for that.

2) There are tethering apps in Google Play, many are free.

I can't help you with the lights or the camera. The boot jingle is one of those "if you have to ask, you can't do it" things. I don't know the particular phone, but at a guess you'd have to modify the ROM. (That means writing computer code, or at least understanding how it's written.)

With all due disrespect to Rukbat, he doesn't know what he's talking about and should perhaps not post in a forum for a device he doesn't have. Virgin Mobile does offer tethering service but I'm assuming you're wanting it free since you asked in the ATR forum. That as well as the lights and sounds edits are all achievable without writing or even understanding coding. You will have to root the device however.
Use the ATR sticky by Remanifest to achieve S-Off and root: S-OFF, root, & Fix Everything All-in-One! If you do not want S-Off, there are older guides available on this forum that will detail achieving just rot with S-On, but I highly recommend sticking with the sticky'd guide. Very easy to follow and you'll be glad you S-Off'd in the long run.
Once rooted you are welcome to continue using the rooted stock rom or any other rom you prefer. Get a root explorer from the Play Store and navigate to Root>System>Media and you'll see bootanimation.zip and bootanimation.mp3. Simply delete the mp3 file to remove the boot sound.
Settings for capacative lights are adjustable with an app called Kernel Tuner available in the Play Store. There are probably free options, and I know I've seen guides in this forum on the subject. Just do some searching. Camera sounds are talked about here: Possible to turn off shutter? You could also just use a different camera app from the Play Store and not use the one included on the phone. No root required for that :)
