If you are rooted... download a Sprint htc hero android 1.5 ROM * assuming you have Sprint htc hero device * then just change the mobile settings to hybrid sorry tired so don't feel like writing a mini guide here.

He doesn't.. read up my first post on this thread so you understand his issue.. he use to be on a Android 1.5 ROM, and had his mode of operation under 1x when he flashed to 2.1 I'd assume and now his setting is stuck... hint to why sprint says to change to hybrid before flashing to 2.1.
