Mobile Network or APN?

As part of my battery saving techniques i often use a widget which turns off the APN. This has direct effect on disabling 3g as it no longer flashes in the task bar, but can someone explain the difference between turning off the APN or turning off the whole 'mobile network' (holding the power button and selecting mobile network off)

Also, do both ways save the same battery?

I think its the same thing.
where as aiplane mode turns off 'all' radio signals.
(although you can turn wifi back on... its a bug)

Yeah i believe turning off APN/Mobile network is basically the same thing,and yes it does save battery quite alot,i do it all the time and i have noticed a difference in batttery life.
