Help mobile sms/spam

Just got a my touch 4g and have been getting alot of spam in the form of text.Tried using t-mobiles filter option but it really doesnt work.Would love any feedback on any apps or phone settings that might stop these text spams.Thought about getting a new mobile number...but might end up being worse as its just another recycled number Thanks.

First download Hancent SMS (free off the market) and install

Go to default messaging app and turn off notifications:

Launch App > Menu > Settings > (scroll down) Received Notification > Uncheck this box > Exit App

Now, launch Handcent SMS

Menu > Settings > Security & Privacy > (scroll down) Filter Settings > Current Mode > Block notification only

Check Unknown Number Filter

You can also set Key Word Filters or number prefix filters too if you want to go that deep.

The reason I set it to Block Notification only is because I sometimes get text message from people I know but may not be in my contacts, or a family member with a new phone or something. best to not just blacklist everyone.

The question I have concerning any of the methods for dealing w/spam is; does this work on a network level, or a device level, meaning, since I'm on a limited text plan, is blocked spam still being counted against my monthly text usage total?

No it does not work on the network level, and yes you'd still be charged for the spam text using the suggested method.
