Moral Dilemma!!!

I am currently suffering from quite a conundrum...

I have an upgrade for Verizon on 7/8, and I can't decide who really deserves my money. Right now, I have a Motorola Droid (OG) and I'm definitely ready for an upgrade. I will also definitely be staying with Verizon. The problem isn't really about the actual phone, I can figure that out on my own (I'm sure soon enough we'll have dual-core and LTE offerings from all the companies.) , the real problem is between the manufactures. I can't decide who to buy a phone from...

I already decided mentally a long time ago that I would definitely NOT buy from Motorola again after the whole e-fuse thing and now the locked bootloaders. I know that they are taking steps to correct their mistakes, but I still figure on principle I should buy elsewhere, but that Droid 3 is looking enticing, and the build quality is fantastic! (My OG has never really suffered much from the drops it's encountered.)

HTC has always looked great, and they really seem to listen to the community, but they haven't really done much for the bootloader stuff. I think that there phones look great, I have never used Sense but I think I would like it. After HTC made the post on Facebook about changing their bootloader policy, I mentally decided that they absolutely deserved everyone's money just for listening to developers and their consumers, which is really cool. I am a little upset with their current phones on Verizon however, and I really wish that the Sensation came out here and not on T-Mobile.

Samsung on the other hand makes some very powerful phones, and to my knowledge, has never really done anything to prevent hacking their phones or stuff like that, and they even gave that Galaxy S II to that Cyanogen Mod developer. I know that they are changing their whole update problem and will be pumping out updates much faster now, which is definitely a good thing. (I want Ice Cream Sandwich as soon as it's out!!!)

So now you all see why I am so puzzled as to who to buy from, hopefully you can offer your opinion to help me and anyone else suffering from this problem.

And of course if we really do have all three of them make new Nexus phones, I'll really be stuck wondering who to buy from...

hardly seems like a dilemma, wait for the GS2 to come out and get that. though i would recommend switching to Sprint to keep from getting bent over the counter every month.

The GS2 looks like it's a great phone, but the problem isn't with the phones, it's with the maker. Are you saying that you think that Samsung deserves my money more than Motorola or HTC? That's the real question.

You should re-read your first post...the moral dilemma is pretty rediculous. You arent going to make or break any of these manufacturers by buying, or not buying 1 phone lol. No one deserves your money, you spend it on the product(phone) you like the most.

same arguement can be said for voting for president.. 1 vote dont do shiit. and in the electro system... with representatives you can even say it means less that shiit. but.. it does let the candidates/representatives know what the public opinions are.

to the OP...
i just want to add...
look up samsung gs phone in usa. they got GB leaks staring earlier this year.. and more leaks and more leaks.. still waiting for official release. has sammy really changed? or just more smoke and mirrors?

Thank you! This is the stuff I'm looking for, it makes you think. You definitely have a point with that, I didn't think of it that way. Atleast now we have leaks though, and I'll be rooting the phone anyways so leaks and other ROM's will work for me.

that is good that leaks will work for you .. for the GS phone...

but your post was about OEMs and which does do more.. to earn the $$. which actually walks their talk??
"timely" leaks for one phone.. do not make for a good track record for future support predictions for future phones.

take sammy for over all post-sales support on all models over the last 5 yrs. it aint pretty! and if you look closely.. each time they promise it will be different. they are working on it.. it is coming soon...

maybe they have changed.. maybe...
if it walks and sounds like a duck!.... it is a duck!

It's hard not to recommend the SGSII, as it's a great phone. plus, you didn't have a negative thing to say about Samsung in you post. :p And comparing voting to buying a phone... You just can't. All these companies will earn their fair share no matter what you choose. They don't make all their money from selling phones anyway. :D read up, watch some reviews. But in my opinion, you can't go wrong with the SGSII, ad mine for almost 2 months now, and it still surprises me with it's speed, smoothness and quality feel. And this comes from a former HTC-slave. :p

Samsung has been producing very fine products in the last 2, 3 years....from TV to refrigerators to smart phones. They did not surpass Sony as the number one consumer good manufacturer in the world simply by luck. And the Galaxy S line outsold any other Android smart phone line by miles because people like their products.

I have the Samsung Fascinate and it is the best phone I have ever seen. The SGS2 is much better than any other smart phone on the market, including the iPhones.

Frankly, upgrade has never been my concern. Think about this, how many people you know are keeping their smart phone long enough to worry about OS upgrade? Very few I would say. The way the mobile technology is advancing, I don't think people will keep their smart phone longer than 2 years. In the Apple world, they expect you to change it every year. I did not wait for my NE2 to buy my Samsung Fascinate. :)

I strongly suggest you to reconsider, or you might be missing out the very best. :)

2 yrs... there maybe 3-5 OS upgrades in that time. most phones.. if you are lucky get 2 OS upgrades. few have seen 3 official upgrades..
EVO got 2.1; 2.2; and 2.3
GalaxyS is waiting on its 3rd.

now about how well the Galaxy S sold world wide... you have to take into consideration.. sammy took the same phone.. redressed it for every carrier and with different names. but they were all Galaxy S phones. NO other phone does that.... but other OEMS create new phones models, but sell for all carriers. but if you take each carrier separately and put up that GS phone against the other HTC top model on that carrier.. how did it do? from what i have read... the HTC phones did just as good of not better in sales.

Numbers mean something, and in 55 days the SGSII sold 3 million units. And this phone has yet to be seen on the US market. At one point they were selling a SGSII every 1-5 seconds. That doesn't happen to crappy phones. A company that gets that many loyal customers, surely must "deserve your money"?

Actually, each SGS phone (the US variants) should BE considered different phones but with the same name. The Vibrant, Facinate, Epic just because of the hardware differences for each one. Tmo vibrant has no FF camera, the Epic has 4G, FF Camera, Notification LED and the QWERTY keyboard. The Facinate had no FF Camera, no Notificaiton LED and other features that they lack or have. If they were so the same phone with just tweaked, it would have been easier to port one ROM from one variant to the other.

then to my point... that they are so different .. they can not be lumped summed into 1 sales number!

on verizon... can we lump sum all "droid" named phones into one phone sales?

According to Samuel Clemens, there are lies, damned lies and statistics.

You can spin statistical data pretty much anyway you want, especially when it comes to demographics. If a podiatrist from Boston asked about the popularity of Android phones in the medical community and you wanted to promote Android, you might likely cite the statistic of all Android Phone sales from a particular carrier. It would be easy state that Android phone sales were phenomenal.

If, however, you wanted to dissuade the doctor from Android you could cite the sales statistic of left-handed podiatrists in the Eastern Massachusetts region and qualify your response that it would depend if you were left or right-handed, but either way, individual sales were abysmal.

The OP indeed has a dilemma because I don't think that his question is able to be clarified by statistic.

I also think about these same things so I can appreciate your call for help.

My vote is for following in descending order:

1) HTC
2) Motorola
100 or Dead Last) Samsung

I'm not thrilled about the locked bootloader on the recent HTC phones either, but that's the ONLY strike I have against them, and even then they are changing it. My wife got the Droid 2 so I got to see how Moto and HTC work side by side. She definitely wishes she has the same functionalities I have with HTC Sense. MotoBlur is just clunky, IMO. She's also had more problems with her phone than me.

A couple of coworkers got Samsung phones, Galaxy S and the Continuum. Both are loaded with way more bloatware than I got on my VZW phone. The Galaxy S owner had a genuine need for the Chrome to Phone feature of 2.2, but had to wait 8 months longer than me to get it! Also, apparently they force Galaxy S users to use Bing as the search engine?? There are far too many things I dislike about Samsung to even consider them. Not to mention they really jacked up the supply of the Incredible I have. This model originally used the AMOLED screens made by Samsung. While demand was high for the Inc last summer, Samsung abruptly stopped their supply in order to use the screens in their own phone, leaving HTC to switch to LCDs midproduction, and leaving a lot of VZW owners pissed off because they could not buy the phone! Samsung seams to represent the type of company I don't want to support.

Right...btut how many of these manufacturers give a f--- what we want over making money

htc does..

No. No company cares more about making people happy than making profit...well there are some but they dont do so well. Any business not focusing on making profit is doing it wrong. I love HTC and they make good products, but I bet there are tons of horrible ideas they pass on consumers may want

on the G2.. some dev was waiting for a release of code... they emailed htc.. they emailed back the new code.

in the E3D..people wrote to htc .. how they disliked it being locked bootloader. Htc announced that they will work with carriers to unlock it. first was the sensation and they are tring to get it done for the E3D.

true.. there are many STAKE holder .. that pull a company in all directions.. not all great for customers.. but the more customers you make happy the more you can sell... repeat business is easier than winning new ones.

I have a similar decision of sorts - on Sprint - buy HTC Evo 3D, wait for Galaxy S2, or Motorola Photon.

My ranking right now of major Android phones available in the US:

1) HTC
2) Samsung
3) LG
4) Sony
5) Motorola - on principle these guys were the first to encrypt the bootloader, and the very last to open up, so they will not be getting any of my money.

I will probably order the Evo 3D later today. Because I am sick of waiting for the GSII even though that is the phone I really want. I love my Evo 4G, I love my Samsung Epic, so I am going to vote with my wallet and buy a HTC again.
