So I would like to start by saying I don't have a huge battery issue, I manage my applications rather well and I don't think my phone has ever actually died on me.

My situation is about to change however, this summer I am going to be working away from home and in most cases away from electricity for long periods of time (maybe days) so I am looking to extend battery life.

I know a lot of people recommend getting clunky extended batteries which are great and all but thing is I have had some experience while working of breaking phones, which is why I have invested in a otter box case for my phone. So the question is weather there is a extended battery that I could ALSO get a (strong) protective case with. (or a bigger batter that doesn't increase the thickness of the phone)

The other option is to get a portable battery charger. I have NEVER owned an extended battery before so I don't know what to look for. It would be nice if it could fit in my pocket (not necessary). I have looked online at a bunch of them but I really don't know where to start.

I hope some of you have experience with these sort of products. Thanks for you help guys.
 
Most extended batteries will be larger than the standard size of your phone unless you go for a small upgrade.
There's Zero Lemon battery which is 7000 mah which will last days. And there's a case for it.
I think the most mah you can get with a battery similar in size to the one already in the S3 is only 100mAh bigger.

I think getting multiple batteries would be best.
 
My recommendation:

Go with multiple normal sized batteries. The anker ones are good and have slightly more capacity than stock at the same size

Option 2 is an external battery charger. These usually carry enough juice to charge your phone 3 or 4 times

I was more leaning towards the external battery charger, mainly for the reason that my phone case isn't the easiest to get on and off. I mean it isn't a real problem but what would be be more efficient and cost efficient multiple batteries or an external one.

I personally like multiple batteries. You dont have to stay plugged in, you just pop out the old and pop in the new and you're back to full charge. I own a slim fit case so its really easy to pop off and on and its not the rubbery plastic (looking at you otterbox) that will get stretched out when you take it off a lot

I too have an Otterbox case and understand what you mean about it not being the easiest thing to take off and replace. Nevertheless, I decided to go with spare batteries rather than an external power pack because I couldn't imagine being able to keep the phone and battery pack connected for hours whilst I was on the move. And, after a few times of changing the battery, I seem to have developed a knack for dealing with the Otterbox case, so it only adds a few seconds to the operation.
 
Thanks everyone for your responses. I'm going to look into getting a couple spare batteries. I do like the idea of a power pack but, it has some disadvantages.
 
Best thing about using spare batterys is you can carry them anywhere on you and they dont make the phone any bigger in your pocket.
Dont know if it exists but a keyring holder for a battery would be cool. It would have a plastic part to attatch the battery to the keyring and at the same time, insulate the connectors from bein shorted by coins etc :)
 
I keep a charger in my Truck that plugs into the cigarette lighter. Takes about 3 hours for a full charge if around 30% or less.
 
For some reason the nexus 7 charger is super fast. Probably because its proprietary.

No clue how good it is for the battery, but they're cheap enough to replace

i think my Nexus 7 charger is 5V/2A, and the GS3 charger is 5V/1A.

anyway, i use a New Trent external charger and it works pretty well. i have gone back and forth on whether i want to double the thickness for the zerolemon or not, but in the end i think i prefer keeping things thin.

I bought a portable charger, 1900 mAh. When I was on the page viewing it. I knew something's dodgy, and when I got the product knew what'd happen. First it wouldn't charge (the charger itself) then I tried to charge my phone (the portable charger was full) and my phone was on 73%, my phone went up to 74% and the battery on portable charger died. Knew this was gonna happen, but luckily was able to get a refund.

Then I looked at another one, read some great reviews so finally bought it and it is AWESOME! I cannot tell how handy this thing is!

This, it's available in different sizes, I personally went for the 3200mAh as i have a Galaxy S3 (2100mAh) and I'm able to charge once fully and second time half which is more than enough. I HIGHLY recommend this problem.

Great things are: it's very light weight. It comes with a Micro USB so that if I want to charge a Micro USB device such as S3 and it comes with a USB port to charge something like an iPhone with your own cable ofcourse though you get a micro USB cable (one attached and one not attached meaning one removable and one non-removable), so you can charge two device at times.

Bad thing is: if you keep it in your side pocket (pants), the device feels warm which may make it uncomfortable but that's minor, you can put it in your bag or on your jacket or put it on the table and it'll be all fine. But that's just a thing I wanted to tell you of.
