Help More data stored than available, lol wut?

So I want to install a rather large game on my lg volt and went through and gutted alot of my never used apps. I needed 2.4gb free but couldnt manage more then 2.1 gb. That's when I did the math and found that my apps only totaled just over 1gb. All my music, movies, and a few pics are on the sd card. I was using AppMgr III to determine program sizes and such and handle which apps to uninstall. So when I did a few searches I remembered the storage window in android settings to help determine what is using what space... thats when I saw this.

I have 4gb of space available.. 2.2gb free.. and 4gb of apps installed. Hows that happen?

It is not rooted so there is nothing I can write to the file system that is outside of the app directories.

No one has any idea huh? My searches turned up nothing, although thats mainly because all my searches were idiots wondering why their 8 and 16gb devices didn't show 8 and 16gb free.

I ended up doing a factory reset.

To see your actual storage partitions and what's really free, get Terminal Emulator and in it say -

df

Your apps and data go into the /data partition.

Other apps make a mess of this simple, critical information.

Clearly something made a mess of it. But apparently no program could tell me what or do anything about it. I tried 2 programs and unfortunately there was no magical single file to find and delete. What ever it was was in 100mb or less pieces.

The system files did seem to be loaded with alot of apk files, but it was hard to tell if that was what I was looking for. The biggest problem however was I could find no conceivable reason why the storage window said 4gb in apps. Most of the programs agreed with appmgr 3 in that I had cleared out about 2.3gb, and still had almost 2gb of installed files when I only had 1gb (And this was with filtering and disabling programs like chrome/google news/games/music from updating themselves).

im pretty sure that its 4gb but right out of the box and android takes 1gb for system installs and kitkat.... I cant remember but mine new only had like 2.7gb usable

Fresh out if the box, you should have 3.93GB - uninstallable stock apps available. The phone has 8GB total, split into 4 for system and 4 for user.
