My HTC sensation seems to have very little space. In settings it says it has a total of around 1gb internal storage, and 3.7gb on the SD card. Is this really all the space I have??

yes and no.
Yes it give you more space for personal files such as photos, music, video's, and other files.
No it wont give you more app space.

If you wish, you could probably root your phone and install a custom ROM. This should free up some additional space on your phone. There's no other way to get rid of the bloatware that manufacturers and carriers put on. It's surprising how much junk they stick on the devices.

It's just I used to have a 16 gig iPhone, that was nice. It just surprised me how little this thing has.

Well, you could have looked at the specs before buying. An S3 for example has 16 or 32GB versions, plus memory cards. An HTC One X also has 16 and 32GB options.
