Most popular Android OS version

[dothackjhe]

Can anyone tell me as to why among other Android OS versions, according to wikipedia.org, version 2.3.3 aka Gingerbread is the most widely used version of Android OS? Don't Android mobile phones have the capability to upgrade / downgrade its OS version? Moreover, if such capability is possible, is it even free?

Hey, I moved this to the Android Lounge, thanks for understanding.

Since each Android phone is unique, it can't upgrade until a version is specifically created for that phone. Gingerbread is the most widely used, because that is what most phones either shipped with, or have been updated to. Its not a choice the user gets generally. (There is an exception for leaked builds, which can be flashed onto the phone prior to the official build rolling out). On the bright side, they are all free upgrades when they do roll out.
