Root Most recent rootable stock Sprint version?

OK, so I've been out of the loop for a while now on the rooting/custom rom scene, because I was fine with my stock 2.2 with root. I've been avoiding the OTA updates like the plague because I didn't want to loose root...but I know for sure there's rootable gingerbread now!

The thing is, I would assume that doing an OTA update preserves all your apps, as-is. Is there a way that I can update to a more recent version, retain root, and not have to reinstall all my apps? Or use Titanium to back them up?

When upgrading anything be it your computer, laptop, or car you should always have a backup.(Ok with car you atleast want to move those things you have in the current car to the new one.) In your particular case I'm not sure if you can upgrade without doing a backup and reinstall. In Fact in your case I would Highly recommend that you do. As far as retaining root I'm not sure if you need to mess with root or not. Will have to wait for someone more experienced than me in this area for an answer.

Well I'd like to keep root because I use wireless-tether frequently.

For informational purposes, I'm currently on Software 3.70.651.1

The OTA it keeps asking me to do is 4.24.651.1, which I understand is not the most recent.

If I accept this OTA update, do I keep my apps? What about root access?

when you are rooted you should never accept an OTA. I would just turn off OTA's. I do believe you can keep root. Have you tried to flash a newer ROM? However you will still need to use Titanium Backup to keep all your apps and their data.

Scooley, I would do decide what you want to run on your phone for Newer Roms and put that onto your SD card. Then make a Titanium backup of all of your apps, then do a Nandroid from recovery.

Once you've done that wipe your phone's Cache, Dalvik cache, and Data then flash the Superwipe program.

For the newest OTA's you have a couple of choices. There is the straight stock Rom that was sent out or The stock looking one a few Developers got together on and made a hair faster and included some nice apps. It also has the option to remove the Sprint apps if you want to.

I hope that helps.

Like the folks said above, you should not accept an OTA while you are rooted. When you load a custom recovery, you removed the phones ability to properly load an OTA. Thats the stock recovery's only function.
Strange and uncanny things can happen if you accept one while rooted. You can loose root, or worse land you in limbo in between being rooted and unrooted without a functioning rom. :(

Like Naters listed above, you can save all of the apps you use with Titanium backup before you update your rom. It will save all of your app data which can be restored once you get your new rom up.

You can absolutely stay on the latest stock rom like Naters linked above, or may I make a suggestion. :)

I will recommend MikG 3.0. It is very close to stock, with a little bit of Mik Magic mixed in. ;)

MikG can be found here if you want to give it a try:
MikG v3.0 [12/17/2011]

If you have any questions or get stuck, post back, lots of folks here to help. :)
