Moto X = Meh

First of all, the X does not have a sd slot, but the G does?? Good job, Moto! Not.

2300 MAH battery seems too small and is fixed.

Has a 5.2" display, but the nav bar makes it a 4.7" display.

The UI looks like it does an even worse job to hide the nav bar than the M8.

Seems another case of style over substance.

Motorola used to be SOMEBODY! :ciao:

Gotta agree on the mSD missing, but being there on the G. WHY?? I like phablets anyhow, but this is a problem....and is heightened this generation as Samsung still has them and now HTC and LG have added it back. Seems like something the media should be commenting on more than they are in these initial articles also.

The other annoyance is it has IR stuff for gestures...but as nearly as I can tell no blasters that can be used with remote control apps.

The lack of an IR blaster doesn't bother me: my current phone has one and I never use it. And it looks like they will release this one promptly in Europe rather than waiting until it's irrelevant then wondering why it doesn't sell.

But it seems to be a change in philosophy here. The original X was about function rather than specs. Not huge, high-res, high power but manageable size, balanced components and some extra functions. This one seems to have got back on the marketing by numbers bandwagon: same chips, same screens as everyone else this year, but without removable storage. And as a result it's bulked up so much that it's actually wider and thicker than the Sony Z3, announced within a day with same screen size but also IP68, microSD and a 30% bigger battery.

I thought Moto had got the idea that they should try to do something different, and focus on usability, function, battery life rather than chasing headline specs. That was the line when the original X came out. Maybe someone who is into the gesture stuff will see it as keeping that but bringing the specs into line, but to me this looks like rejoining the herd and abandoning the more interesting ideas of the original X.

Catch is I think the Z3 will be 16gb in most markets so that is less than 11gb for apps and 2gb less than that when L releases. ART tales up more space.

I might get a Note 3 on the cheap and wait for the 64bit chips next year.

Added: I think the X will sell weakly, but the price point of the G might do very well in the low end segment. Very good retail price.

Blame people like me for that gripe, we bought the X and didn't complain about the SD card was fine with the cloud. Those on the moto g well they cried foul the whole time especially on the 8gb if moto X had 8gb model bet it would have had an SD slot
2300 mah battery..2100 is a non issue for me on my ultra, and I am not afraid to take this bad lad apart to do some work...but I 100% agree removable should be a standard.

I will never complain about on screen keys...they aren't bad and they go away when I am immersed and move with my devices on top of less accidentally presses like I have with this ultra. and its Samoled which is a double edged blade.
As for the ir sensors if we can't use them to control our Telly's that is a MASSIVE FAIL.

Agree with the above but you forgot to mention that the G also has front facing stereo speakers too ! Come to find out that only the bottom speaker is active on the new X when playing any kind of media or using the speakerphone. They can fit those speakers in the G and not the larger X. ? What a shame.
Guess I am going to be waiting for the new 810 soc's to come out to get me interested again.

Regarding the external storage....is it even worth it anymore, given the restrictions that came down with KitKat?

My understanding is that apps are not allowed to save files to custom folders on external storage anymore.

Android L supports cards in the framework again. Even if just for media, I think they are essential, or I do not buy the device.

Thanks for that info rushmore. I've been trying to find something that stated this specifically on the internet, but have only been able to turn up a few rumors / theories.

Do you know for sure that Android L will bring back SD Card user privileges?

For instance, if I take a picture using a 3rd Party app....will I be able to have the app save the picture to a directory of my choosing on the external SD Card?

If so, can you point me to where this information is?

Greatly appreciated!

SD Card Access Changes for the Better in Android L | Androidheadlines.com
Now thankfully it looks like Google has heeded the call of the masses and decided to change permissions for SD card usage in Android L, the next version of Android due to be released sometime this fall. What Google hasn

Each device is built for the market it's intended. The X is a "premium" device intended for markets where it's easier to access Data. In the US, most people have higher data caps (or unlimited for some) than in other countries. Therefore, it's not necessary to add the micro SD to the X because most people in its intended market will not complain, as the cloud and high speed internet are much less of an issue.

The G is intended for markets where that convenience isn't as available or as "inexpensive". Thus, the G has a micro SD.

If the micro SD is an issue, then it sounds like the X is just not intended for you. Maybe the Galaxy S5 is.

Not having an SD is not an issue to me... if we had higher internal. 32g internal only will not be enough... esp with L.
