Help Motorola Bionic upgrade question

does not upgrading to ics have an effect on the phones performance? or is there something else goin on?

ever since I started getting the notice that the OTA ics upgrade was downloaded I keep hitting 'install later' kinda annoying, but I noticed that the phones performance has gone to sh*t, wifi wont work half the time, the phone is REALLY slow, lags like crazy (ie: I tap on an app, it glows, then like 5-10 sec. later the app opens), weatherbug wont update anymore (the weather info not the app itself), and I constantly have to restart the phone for anything to work... so, is it because I wont upgrade, or is it another issue? anyone else have this issue?

EDIT: also batt running out faster (I have the OEM extended batt)

If you plan to stay on Gingerbread visit the All Things Root sub-forum and there are instruction on how to disable the OTA so you will never get the message again.

If you are not going to stay with Gingerbread ... why not just accept the update?

It is not surprising that having the update code resident on your Bionic ready for you to say "do it" would have a negative impact on performance.

How frequently do you get the request to install message? I assumed it was only displayed when you powered on your Bionic.

I get it once or twice a day, sometimes when I reboot, but not everytime.

Why not upgrade? well I'm legally blind and in ics they did away with the accesability feature "zoom mode" which is the reason I bought my droid X a couple years ago in the first place and now renders the phone useless to me without it, I tried a few phones with ics that have the "huge font" option but it wasnt big enough, bottom line, I need that "zoom mode" feature, I even extracted it (zoomservice.apk) from my phone and tried installing it on other phones running ics but it wont install for some reason.

I've spent countless hours on the phone with verizon and motorola, only to get "we're sorry to hear that", nevermind google, tried calling and emailing them only to be ignored.

Very frustrating to say the least.
 
That being the case it would appear you want to stay on Gingerbread for a while.

Visit ... http://androidforums.com/bionic-all...w-block-upgrades-updates-motorola-bionic.html ... in the All Things Root sub-forum and there are instruct ins on how to keep the OTA off your Bionic.

If you can take the OTA in the future there should be no problem in doing so.

The down side of Gingerbread by the rest of us that don't have the constraint you identified is that ICS is faster (the system uses both cores) and the user interface is much cleaner. They corrected a lot of the loose ends.

well basiclly I really want to know if anyone else that doesnt want ICS and is sticking to GB is having "slow phone" issues or any other drawbacks due to not upgrading. I'm not crazy about rooting my bionic as it's still covered by verizons warranty. If the only way to keep the phone the way it was before the upgrade is to root, it then becomes verizons issue as they are contractually obligated to provide users with a phone that is accesable to the user. So by law, the would have to accomodate me as I am legally disabled (Im on disability due to my eye, yes eye, I lost one stopping a drunk driver 2 years ago).
So if I root the phone and they find any trace of it, it breaks their end of the contract.
 
You could visit the Verizon forum and start a discussion of their liability.

Perhaps they would make a different model phone available to you (I have no way of knowing).

If you choose to stay with the Bionic and want to stop the OTA ... you now have the link to the information.

I was oing a little research on this for you (zoomservice.apk) and it looks like the Razr has the accesiblity option for zoom mode on ics as per moto here. https://motorola-global-portal.cust...019/~/can-i-change-the-font-size?-(droid-razr) scroll down to the bottom of the article to read about zoom mode.

I am trying now to see if I can get some one with a rooted razr to pull it out and give me a copy of it. The reason the one you tried using was from GB and it will not work on ICS.

I will post back when I see if I can get it to work.
 
Thats really weird, I went to the verizon store and went through (with a rep's help) every phone running ICS (including the razr) and found none that had the zoom mode. talked to motorola and verizon tech support and they said it's not on isc..... now I gotta go back up there and check it out again.

Thanks for the info, unfortunatly I've been down that road a few times, I really need that 'zoom mode' box, I dont want a phone screaming out my messages, etc. in public, and the 'huge font' on ics isnt big enough, searches have been done by myself, verizon and motorola for an app that duplicates the magnifying box with no luck. I wish I had some developing skills, I'd disassemble the latest working version of 'zoomservice.apk' and make it work with newer operating systems.

I wonder, does jellybean have it? couldnt find anything on it so I'm guessing the answer is no
