motorola creating its own OS??? wtf?

I had a Motorola Q for one whole miserable year. That experience is enough for me to laugh heartily at any rumor, real or not, that Moto would ever attempt to make their own OS. That phone was a pathetic attempt to play with the big boys. Had they never taken Android and used it in the Droid 1, I don't think they would be worth a dollar per share on the stock exchange today. But, that's just me.

The greatest part if the Droid 1 was its openess. No locked bootloader, no unremovable kernel, vanilla Android. That was really the phone that put Android on the map. So in essence Moto and Google helped eachother a great deal with that device. If anyone is shooting themselves in the foot it's Moto and their military encription policy as of late. HTC will more than likely get my money come upgrade time. As much as I love my DX, I just won't put up with these limits anymore.

They are welcome to try their own OS if the rumor hold any truth. But I certainly wouldn't expect it to go anywhere at all. Android is shooting alright, but not in their foot.... they're shooting themselves to the top of the OS food chain.

I was going to tear into Motorola but they aren't the only ones.

HTC now is locking bootloaders just like Motorola.

And Google is helping.

The future of Android is not good. I better stop making fun of Apple because my next phone might be an iPhone 5.

Well that's par for the course. Is the bootloader locked down like Moto Droids are? If that's the case I'm going to be seriously disappointed because I've been eyeballing the EVO 3D's development and have seriously considered upgrading to it upon its release.

And what's this about Google helping them? How is Google helping the OS's lock down their phones? I'd like to read the source you got that from Jamor.

we dont know yet...

but the TB and EVO Shift had the same bootloader lockdown.. but both got rooted very fast. then both was hacked in quick turn for custom recovery. I will think the E3D will have the same.

That's perfectly acceptable to be. It's the military inscription lock Moto slapped on their latest Droids that's put me off my milk. A general, 'hackable' security put in place is just fine. So long as I can look forward to running Cyanogenmod on my next Android device, I'm as cool as the other side of the pillow.

Seriously, moto software I will run from.

TB was locked down.. but it was rooted and hacked within a few days of release!

That turned out to be a prank. It is locked down and the battery life isn't long enough to make many attempts before it needs to be charged again. This one might never get "hacked".:p

The Motorola Q runs Windows Mobile 5 not a Motorola OS.

I'll try and find the article about Google if I can dig it up again.

But from what I've gathered, both HTC, Motorola, and Google are working to lock down all of their Android phones in the future.

Motorola is ahead of the game, having locked down the Droid X and a couple others. Now HTC is following suit with the Incredible S and TB.

Sounds legit to me!

It just doesn't make any sense to me. Why, after all the talk about openness and their philosophy on how a creative OS will defeat all contenders would they suddenly turn around and help lock down bootloaders? That would be like Jesus Christ turning 30 and becoming a rogue assassin, killing bums in their sleep just for shits & giggles.

The only thing that I could possibly imagine them doing such a thing for, would be to make their Nexus the only choice for people like me to ever consider. Which would be awfully conniving. Because as much as I'd love to get a Nexus, until they are available on more than just T-Mobile, it's not all that feasible.

According to the internets (so it must be true), the next Nexus Phone will be the Moto Targa on VZW this winter. It's a quad core 4G phone... drool.
