Root Motorola Droid Bionic - All Things Root Guide

I have tried, what I think, is everything to root my droid bionic. It was rooted before, but then I got an update and lost root and have been unable to re-root. I gave up several months ago, then along came ICS. I could NOT download this update no matter what I did. Even support couldn't help. They want me to go back to factory reset. Well I don't want to do that until I can save my apps/data in Titatium, but without root--no way, so I'm back again to try to root, backup, unroot, reset, download ICS and root again, but I first have to root.

My info:
Windows 7 64bit
I have "Mot composite ADB Interface"
Android 2.3.4
System 5.9.905.XT875
Build 5.5.1_84_DBN-74
Yes, I have debugging on
Yes, I have "unknown sources" checked
Yes, I'm in charge only mode

What I have tried:
motorolaoneclickroot
droidbionicrootnew
motofail_windows

oneclickroot will start and even reboot my phone several times but after it's all finished and says my phone should be rooted, it's not. I still can't access Titanium, but I can access BusyBox and superuser. "Root Checker" states it's NOT rooted.

bionicrootnew--nothing really, it quickly goes to..."All done, run Bionic Recovery from App Draw
Press any key to continue..."
My phone never even rebooted
When I "press any key" the program stops

motofail--I get " 'adb' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file" over and over again. After about a dozen of these I get "[*] Cleaning up..."
then back to the "adb" response again for several lines then
"[*] Rebooting..." but it doesn't reboot, then onto the "adb" response again until it comes to "[*] Exploit complete! [*] Press and key to exit."
Then it says, "Press any key to continue..." which I do, and it exits and still no root.

What suggestions do you have?

I would follow the steps for how to flash 5.9.905 or 6.7.246 with rsdlite, use the 6.7.246 modified fxz file (the link is in my signature). This will get you onto ICS with all of your data (but you still need a FDR). Then I would use razorsedge to root ICS. Install titanium backup backup everything. Do a FDR. Sign in. Go to settings-security & screen lock and check Unknown sources. Open play store and accept the EULA and let the market install ALL of your apps. For those apps you need data restored use TiBu to restore data for the app only not the app it self unless it did not install from the market.

Unfortunately, I simply do not have the time to maintain this thread any more. If anyone wants to take over, please do so. I wanted to have this whole thing re-done months ago...

Sorry guys, but I'm too busy.

I've tried downloading the both the full size file and the minimal file and both produce the same error.

I should be able to provide you with links to what ever you need but what 2 files were you trying to download?

Was this meant for me? In the instructions it states at the top "this will wipe everything but your sd card". Of course I'm trying to save my data. The instructions to flash show "wipe everything" but your instructions seem to indicate this will get me to ICS keeping my data. Which is right, or what am I missing?

Modified 5.9.905 (md5 sum f7c66ab368f1be30a1b77ba157b96347) This will remove root but you will have to uninstall Super user app and keep your data (just like you would for any other app)

I clicked on this link and downloaded the zip file, but the only files in the zipped folder are as follows:
7 .img files
6 .bin files
cdrom
ebr
mbr
VRZ_XT875_6.7.246.XT875.Verizon.en.US_CFC_01.xml

I don't see anything to "install" from these files. What am I missing?

sorry, I meant

not the 5.9.509

Yes this was for you. You need to download the modified 6.7.246 fxz file and don't unzip it. This fxz will keep your data. You then use rsdlite to flash the zip. It will decompress and flash it for your. Follow the steps in the thread and you will be on ICS.

Thank you OutOfPhase. I completed your instructions and now have ICS. It shows Android 4.0.4 System 6.7.246, and I still have all my data and customizations. I downloaded Razrs edge for root. I made sure I had the latest drivers and ran Razrs Edge, but got the same response I did with motofail under GB, " 'adb' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file"

Any ideas?

BTW, I never got the 22/22 complete in RSDlite. My phone did power off. I did get the green android. It showed updating files. I also manually powered my phone on and off as instructed by RSDlite, which still shows "in process..." in the result screen even now when my phone is up and running with ICS

As I was playing around with my phone I noticed it's connected as a "mass storage device". There isn't an option to have "charge Only". I wondered if this might be part of the problem. I "ejected" the drives from my computer, but it still shows on the phone as "mass storage". I ran Razrs Edge again to see if this would work, but no, it came back with the same problem.

Make sure usb debugging is enabled (when you plug your phone into your pc it should say usb debugging enabled) and when you plug in your phone set it to Media Device (MTP). Then try razors edge.

If usb debugging is not enabled-settings-developer options and check usb debugging.

How are you trying to run this? Are you unzipping the razrs_edge_windows.zip file, or are you just trying to run this from inside the zip file?

To me, the best way to do this:

- extract the razrs_edge_windows.zip file to its own folder. I suggest making it c:\razrs_edge

- start a windows command line window (start, type cmd and hit enter)

- enter the following command to get to the proper folder: cd \razrs_edge (that's letter c letter d space backslash etc.)

- start the process by typing run

It's possible that you can also unzip into a folder and double-click the "run.bat" file, but if that doesn't work, try what I detailed above.

My guess is that you are not unzipping the file first...

IT WORKED!!!! :D

Thank you, thank you, thank you both of you--doogald & OutOfPhase (btw how do you do an official "thank you")

I put my phone in media device (i already had debugging activated).

I did just as you stated, doogald, and it worked perfectly. I now have root. I am using Titanium to back up everything as I type this.

You all are great! Thanks again!

No. Go to settings privacy and then factory data reset. Make sure you save your internal sdcard to your pc just incase. This will erase everything. Follow the directions in my earlier post on how to set up your phone after a fdr

"Do a FDR. Sign in. Go to settings-security & screen lock and check Unknown sources. Open play store and accept the EULA and let the market install ALL of your apps. For those apps you need data restored use TiBu to restore data for the app only not the app it self unless it did not install from the market."

Using a modified FXZ to save data only to later perform a FDR seems to be adding extra steps to a situation that would not need them - using the full FXZ (or a modified one that does *NOT* erase internal storage but *DOES* erase /data) seems to be a better way to go. That would have the benefit of performing the FDR while flashing the full FXZ - saving apps to carry over can still cause instabilities particularly if there are apps that are not ICS compliant being carried over from gingerbread.

Do you have the modified FXZ that erases /data but doe not erase the internal storage?

(Oh and BTW - I somehow forgot / misremembered that you were dfib lol :D)

The reason I suggested to flash the modified fxz then do a FDR was because the member was having issues rooting and did not want to go to ICS without rooting and a backup first. Yes it was the long way but this way he was able to go to ICS, root, backup, do a FDR and let the apps install from the play store then restore data to only the apps that need it. This way all the apps were a fresh download for ICS and minimized the GB "taint" and still kept their data.

No but I will whip on up :)

Issues rooting GB - got it now. Took me a few seconds of reading that over and over until the light bulb (finally!) went off.

Is it possible to root 6.7.246.xt875.verizon.en.us with ICS installed? The only reason I root is to use WiFi Tether which of.course requires root. If not, I'd be happy with another free alternative that doesnt require root and doesn't time out / block ports/protocols if there is one.
