Motorola Triumph Camcorder - 720p Stats

I ran a few quick video tests this morning. Phone was stationary to try and minimize encoding CPU stress on device. The camcorder recording options are mentioned below, testing the Straight Mpeg-4, H263, and H264 encoders individually.

A few other things to note:

Using a class 4 16GB off-brand memory card, however it's tested capable at writes between 2.5 and 4MB/sec. Because the files are recording at a rate significantly less than this, I don't believe micro-SD card speed is the limiting factor.

Switch Camera = Main Camera
Color Effect = none
Video Quality = 720p
Video Encoder = (varies, all three results shown)
Video Duration = 30 seconds MMS
White Balance = Auto

The results are attached in JPEG images, I guess it's worth noting that the devices maximum framerate never exceeds 9 frames per second, which probably isn't very good. Perhaps someone with additional knowledge can add to this discussion. The video file attributes were fetched with a program called "MediaInfo."

I suppose the microphone on this thing is also mono, so unless it's possible to plug in an external (stereo) mic to the headphone jack, we're looking at single-channel audio.

Okay, so I just ran some more tests, using every single Video Quality from 720p to QCIF, and this camcorder's max framerate at any setting, any resolution, never exceeds 8.621 frames per second. I don't know what's limiting it, if it's hardware we're stuck ... perhaps there is some Market download alternate for camcorder?

The one on the right is just default high setting and the left is MMS but switched to 720p since it looks like that's what you did. Both achieved max frame rates of 20fps and high has an average of 14fps.

Unauf, I'm unclear on exactly what you changed to achieve your max framerate, please list out your phone/camera settings so I can attempt to duplicate. Thanks.

I got the best results with the default high setting. No changes.
The setting show
Main Camera
No color effect
720 Video Quality
H264
30 Minutes
Auto white balance

I can't duplicate those results, how strange. Maybe someone with a few minutes on their hands can give this a shot and post up some results.

Ironically, Motorola has now changed their tune on the phone's capabilities. Although their original press release specs clearly stated the video capture at 720p, 30 frames per second, the Motorola website has now reduced this spec to read "up to 24 fps capture; up to 30 fps playback."

Please forgive me for my pessimism here, but ... what a joke.

You're right, Stef, I'm just venting a little frustration. A device with extraordinary hardware specs, seemingly crippled by ... something or other.

Sure. There are some amazing things about the phone. I think the HDMI out for example is a great feature, as is the screen size. I'm just saddened by the reboots and the GPS. FWIW, I am not having a problem with cellular or WiFi reception, nor touch sensitivity.

It's not really even the camera that creates the major frustration, it's the half-baked ... well pretty everything about the device. And then, to add insult to injury, you enter the 'official' motorola forums and there the "MotoExperts" say things like, "yeah, we know there's a problem, but it might be a week, or 4 months, or never, before there is any fix (if ever)."

That kind of complacency in fixing a broken device is a true source of frustration.

(Again, I apologize for the outburst)

Hmmm... I seem to recall that I read 24fps weeks ago(probably on the MSM8655 data sheet), however it doesn't really matter to me as video would only be used in a pinch o.w. either a dedicated unit or higher end camera would be used.

Can anyone comment on the playback to HDMI out results? Another post said it was bad but perhaps their cable. I haven't acquired a micro to normal HDMI but this would be a very useful feature to me. Along with a well working player. (Moboplayer is what I've tried).

Files above 2GB don't seem to work to well, which is limiting. So either you have to lower the bitrate or have a movie that isn't to long.

I just went onto my back deck and videotaped kittens, the pool, the trees and sky. Then I brought it back in and connected it via HDMI to my 26" TV.

Using Moboplayer my output was a little brighter, was slightly more overexposed and a bit more color saturated than what was being displayed on the MT screen at the same time. But it didn't look bad. It seems to shoot on par with the other low end (sub-$150) HD cameras.

I then tried playing the video back using the other choices and got the same results. So I changed the TV's preset to "Movie" and it got rid of some of the overexposure. But it wasn't so bad as to be distracting.

So, once again I might be in minority, but the video out via HDMI works well. No problems that I can find.
