Motorola updates?

I just came from using an evo shift,i could go to settings and check for updates. I am using a motorola photon now. Does the phone just update on its own if not where do i check for them. Thanks

Settings > About Phone> System Updates

So i updated my phone, that was about 9:00 pm and now its 10:45 pm. it updated about 5 times now. the update says its 45.36
has anyone else had this problem
