Motorola, your silence is deafening

I would like to play devils advocate with a couple senarios here and some what if quesitons:

What if the ad for Best Buy and the Facebook post was a publicity stunt to draw up a bunch of talk? They succeeded.

What if the end of the month means the 24th but that is when pre orders start? Again, they have succeeded in creating talk.

As technology consumers, anticipation can be a HORRIBLE thing and we all know that. Especially when we are not being given much to go off of. We have two sketchy pictures, one from Verizon giving it a price point of 799 I believe and one more or less official looking Best Buy picture saying 799 but we have all seen the flaws in that one. We also have the Moto rep saying "end of the month." We are not only seeing but we are all participating in what is called buzz marketing.

I graduated with a degree in PR and I have worked in a few small firms and I would like to think that I know a little about what I am talking about. I am not an expert by any means but the first thing to know is that ANY advertisment whether it is good or bad is GOOD advertisment. Moto and Verizon are creating a buzz and yes, the majority of us believe that the price point is high but I bet a lot of us will still buy it.

They have cause a debate on whether people want to purchase the pruduct because of its specs, its price or the fact that it IS NOT an Apple product. Personally I feel that all of this is linked some how. Controlled "leaks" of information happen all the time in the PR/Advertising world and they work. Think about this though: how long was it between the time that we all OFFICIALLY knew the iPhone was coming to Verizon and the time the pre-orders began?

My only issue with this would be that this buzz is only being generated amongst people like us that participate in tech forums and follow tech blogs. It's really not something that is impacting much of the general public. I would be surprised if 1 in 100 people have any idea this is going on. The iPhone 4 leak on the other hand was national news (but then again they are Apple). Also I understand advertisements / PR that stir up controversy or generate conversation are good thing, but you don't want that to be because you laid an egg. I'm sure BP would have preferred not to have been part of the largest oil spill in US history...

Yes re: BP Oil but I also did not say that ALL leaks whether physical or metaphorical were company created. This is why I was only playing devils advocate and not saying "This IS what Moto and Verizon are doing." Just ideas is all.

There is so much info and dis-info running around that it is hard to tell what is real and what isn't, and I personally feel that they really mean "the end of the month" as we are nearing that critical time frame where the company will tell us when it will be released and when preorders are to start - that is if they are going to make the end of the month launch that is. (Sorry for the HUGE run-on sentance)

I'm just busting your chops. Hopefully everything about the Xoom clearing FCC is accurate. That's usually a surefire sign of imminent release(sounds sexual). Although the potential of the wi-fi only model following shortly after has made me consider waiting...grrr. I want info.

I figured as much.

I know what you mean about waiting but I travel at times for work and I am really trying to open my companiy's eyes to better computing so I am going to go with the 3g4g/WiFi model as it will include the whole she-bang.

http://www.tomsguide.com/us/motorola-xoom-android-tablet-ipad,news-10063.html

I thought this was a pretty fair article and worth a read. We'll all disagree that the xoom is an ipad copy, but the rest of the piece is pretty good.

No matter how you look at it, the Xoom is a darn expensive tablet. Expensive enough that Motorola may have problems justifying the cost and may need to help potential buyers finding the hidden value (it's probably not in the integrated barometer, though.) For more than $900, I would want to see some real value, perception value and functional value, that would deliver a handful of stunning features I can't get on any other ($628+tax+accessories) iPad. I am not aware of any such a feature and Honeycomb isn't enough, as great and as competitive it may be.

This guy is clearly just another iDouche.

First of all, wtf is this $900 being quoted on? How about comparing apples to apples? $800+tax+accessories vs $829+taxes+accessories. Same price point.

What the hell does this guy want? A bigger screen? check. Two cameras? check, 2X processor? check. 4x RAM? Check. High def video recording and playback? Check. Ability to use your tablet as you see fit? Check.

The apple fan boys of the world will always find something to whine about when it comes to Android. They will not likely ever make the switch to Android, but when it comes to new customers; Android has the ability to take a large market share because of the options the OS has on the hardware side. You can get a great Android tablet right now from $250-$800(rooted NookColor, Galaxy Tab, Xoom).

I really do not understand why people are so pissy about the price on the Xoom. It seems pretty reasonable to me for what it is. Yeah, Moto is not likely to ship as many units as they would have if they had made a smaller, less powerful device at a lower price point, but if they had released such a tablet--I am sure we would all be commenting on a thread about how lame Moto is for releasing a tablet with no better tech than the rest of the tablets out there.

I for one am happy Moto has produced the Xoom. I hope we see a lot more of these high end units.

HTC will take care of you next month. They are a better manufacturer any, imo.

I like HTC better as well. I just question whether update wise, being that the Xoom is the Honeycomb "flagship" device, will HTC and other tablet manufacturers get updated as frequently as the Xoom likely will?

That is a legitimate concern. I do not think new tablets will get left behind unless they come out with hardware that does not support the new OS. Either way, Andoid devices are not completely dependent on official updates. If it can be done--someone will create a ROM for it. I have an Incredible. We are still waiting for an official Gingerbread update, but I have been running 2.3 since December(though it is really not that special, imo).

I can see Motorola handling the Xoom much like they did the Droid. When Droid came out, there were already other android phones, but Droid set a new standard. The specs, the screen, it was all well received and well liked. As time passed, the nexus and incredible and evo stepped up to the plate and offered other choices.

I think the Xoom will be the same. It will be the new standard for android tablets, large screen and honeycomb, plus great specs. And, if you want one at the beginning, it will cost more. As time goes by, the Xoom will start dropping their price and other android tablets will step up to the plate to offer more choices.

No offense, pretty much every other phone out there is waiting for the official Gingerbread release, not just the Inc. To my knowledge the only device officially running Gingerbread is the Nexus S.

No offending comment noticed.
I am aware of the delay. I am just saying, it does not matter if there is a delay on Google because there are plenty of developers developing ROMs which incorporate the updates(and make them better, imo)
If I had to guess, I would say 2.3 was created specifically for the Nexus S. It would not surprise me if 2.4+ hits and 2.3 is scrapped. There is really not a big change from 2.2 to 2.3.
