Root Move to Ting?

PiERiT

Newbie
Has anyone successfully ported their EVO V to Ting? If so, any special steps that were required?

From what I can gather, VM phones are not officially supported, but if it's rooted and flashed to a Sprint-based ROM, I don't see a reason why it wouldn't work?

Edit: I put the request in yesterday and got an email 5 hours later that the transfer was complete. I followed their instructions for updating my profile/PRL and enabling 4G/MMS. There's no 4G here, so I can't test that, but everything else works. :)

If you make the jump, you can use my referral link if you want. It gives you $25 to use towards their service.

I don't see why not....I'm pretty sure this community can overcome (has overcome) the issues...and sounds like ting is out to help us as consumers....I'm gonna read up on them, this is the first I've heard of them

Straight from tings website:

"There are a few different reasons we’re not officially supporting the remaining models on the unwieldy “whitelist” at present.

It is a 3G device without MMS that we haven’t explicitly tested. It is a 3G device with MMS for which we don’t yet have the step-by-step instructions to reprogram the MMS settings. It is a 4G WiMAX device for which we don’t yet have instructions to reprogram the MMS and 4G data settings. This is where the Ting community comes in: If you try to bring a device other than the seven officially supported phones over through the bring your Sprint device to Ting open beta, we’d love to hear from you; we’ll be using your feedback to build out our supported devices list."

Ting is CDMA? You will have a hard time trying to get it to work by reprogramming it. CDMA workshop is a nightmare. This is why sim cards are awesome. I would just stay on virgin mobile.

Ditto , if you want freedom to switch go unlocked GSM . CDMA phones aren't designed to port to different careers

Virgin uses a screwy mms system.

If they support the Evo 3d, install an Evo 3d rom and Sprint PRL and tell them it's an Evo 3d, it should run just fine. They just don't want to do a stock Evo V due to the MMS.

I am on Mobster V3 with Sprint's 60690 PRL.

I just put the transfer request in... I'll post an update with whether or not it works.

Why Ting??? I did the Savings Calculator thingy and it turns out Virgin Mobile is way Cheaper and i get more then Ting would give me

............ Same Sprint Coverage????

It depends on usage. I use less than 100MB of data per month, and don't use many minutes or texts either.

Ting would cost me anywhere between $15 and $23.

That was my problem, almost any other carrier would double my bill or even boot me for how I use my phone.

I think I'll wait to see if someone else gets WiMAX working on Ting, then I'll likely jump ship to them as well. It would also be slightly cheaper (about $6) for me based on my average usage.

I can't say for certain, since there's no 4G here (Milwaukee isn't a big enough market?), but I reckon it would work. One of the steps is to input a new WiMAX address in the ##DATA# menu.

Ting also has a referral program going until the 15th. $25 if someone refers you, $75 for the first person you refer, and $50 for every person afterwards. I got referred and referred two someone's, so my cell service is free for ten months. Fine by me. :)

I looked closer at their plans, and I can't save money at all. In fact, my bill would go up. Using their configuration tool, I am at $44/mo with (500min/1000txt/1GB) and there's a chance I could go over that. There are surcharges that probably take it close to $50.

VM's $45 plan offers more of everything, and I only pay $38.25/month for that plan.

The only advantage is the assumed roaming agreements given the size of their coverage map. This is a pretty good plan for someone who needs the roaming coverage but take a close look at all of their maps for all services to be sure it will work where you need it to.

And how ting customer service or replacement of a phone works? Does it compares to VM? I know VM customer service is a headache most of the times, but in replacements i think is the best out there of any prepaid company.

I think it'll appeal more to people who don't have 4G coverage, such as myself. It's hard to use a lot of data when your speeds top out at 100kb/s. Small amount of data = small monthly bill.

Well they won't replace an EVO V, I can tell you that much :p.

Their forum support is pretty good. I've made a couple posts and got a response within an hour. Haven't tried email or phone support.

The good part is that it's prepaid, no contract, and you can bring your phone over. If you find that it doesn't work for you, you can walk away at any time without suffering any losses.
