Moving on from the Desire - One X or S3?

@ndyk

Newbie
So everytime I need help, this forum is where I go to first!! Massive android fan here, not into rooting tbf, but love what you can still do with stock ones.

Had my Desire for over two years now, but gotta move on. I'm torn between the HTC One X or the S3 though and although I've looked on here there seems to be very little between them, has anyone got either of them or thinking of getting them?

Main things for me are:

Display - had a look today in local shop and actually thought the S3 was better but on here seen a few post that say the HOX is? What are they like in sunlight and for not getting scratched?

Camera/Video - apart from twitter, this is main use of my phone

Music - massive music fan here, so speaker/sound quality?

Battery life - take on board the comments about HOX battery unremovable but otherwise?

Build Quality - I loved the feel of the S3 but seen some comments about it the case scratching easily

Memory - not really an issue for me, but like the idea of dropbox I have to say

Any thoughts from any of you guys who have got either as to how they compare and any negatives for either?

Hope if you can reply this thread will help others like me decide as I'm sure I'm not the only one who can't make their mind up

Thanks.

For me:

One X - too big
S3 - See One X

I've got a mate with the One X, my g/f has the S3 and for preference I'd actually go for the Samsung (amazingly, I normally hate Samsung products). Please manufacturers can we have the same spec as the S3 but with a 4.3" screen please ? I'll happily accept it has to be slightly thicker...

I think for most of us the fact the S3 has a removable battery and SD card is a big plus (although I suspect most users wouldn't necessarily need either - the g/f's S3 hasn't even got a SD card in it...)

FWIW both the reviews I've seen have the S3 slightly ahead, YMMV.

I was in exactly the same situation and have now upgraded to the Samsung S3, for the reasons given above. I would have preferred to go with HTC but a non-replaceable battery and lack of SD card were both inexplicable retrograde steps in my book. In the past I've disliked Samsung products but was swayed by positive reviews. After three weeks, I've already found a few glitches with the S3 (mostly OS issues that would be common to all Android 4 phones) and hope I won't regret choosing Samsung!

5 HD games, 16GB version nearly full. Had to use directory bind to move game files to extsdcard

The HOX screen is actually rated as the best there is at the moment but you will only notice its better than the SGS 3 once you compare the 2 side by side.

The camera on the SGS 3 is rated as better than the HOX but in actual use you probably wouldn't notice any difference.

The HOX is claimed to be quite weak with playing music but i find it to be fine myself, the SGS 3 sound chip is rated as very good.

Battery life i find on the HOX is ok & usually get 40 hours between charges, the SGS 3 seems to be better for battery life.

Build quality goes to the HOX & the case is a lot stroger as its made from polycarbonate vs plastic for the SGS 3 (i used to work in plastic molding) Polycarbonate is the stuff they make crash helmets from so is very strong.

The SGS 3 has the advantage of an sd card slot & also comes in 3 sizes 16GB, 32GB, & 64GB, the HOX only 32GB also you can get dropbox with both phones.

I went for the one x.
Soft spot for HTC after the desire. Actually quite like sense as well (ducks) :)

Really like the look and feel of it - which was one of the main reasons I went for it. Looked at the s3, and it is much nicer in the hand than in pictures, but still preferred the x. The screen is very good, but I think the x is marginally better. In day to day use I don't think you would complain about either.

Find battery and sound fine, but not really into music much. The stock player has soundhound and tune in integrated which works well. Camera is really good compared to the desire, but never used the s3 to compare.

Build on mine is rock solid, but there has issues with some early units. If you get one now I wouldn't worry.

It does depend a bit on how you want to use it. If you are into modding, rooting and roms, the s3 probably has the edge there. There isn't an s-off solution yet. S3 forums are probably more active as well.

However as I like sense, don't have any real issues, so I don't feel the need to root yet. Hopefully when I get bored - the scene will be better!

Interesting race on just now on who gets JB first. Lots of rumours - as the smaller company I think HTC may get there first for bragging rights.

According to most old time Samsung users Samsung aren't that good when it comes to updates where as HTC have already released 4 for the ONE X since its April release. Although none of that is relevant if you are going to root, & as has been pointed out the SGS 3 is more active there as the ONE X doesn't have s-off yet.

I've seen 3 new builds for the region on the sgs3. I don't think there have been 4 yet. Rumours that jellybean is nearly ready for release have already surfaced
