Moving On

I have been lurking on this forum since July when I got my Captivate and it has been a wealth of information. Most everyone is so helpful and knowledgeable. I do get quite sick of all the complaining about when Froyo will come out and I understand the frustration, but JC, do people need to bitch everyday???

I like my phone. It is my first Android device coming from WinMo and Blackberry and I have been very impressed most of the time. The GPS issue is somewhat annoying but I can live with it. The three things that drive me nuts:

1. I am constantly getting a "Database almost FUll message" which requires me to go in and delete the data and cache of my browser. I get this message even if I visit one Google page. It is very annoying and I have had enough.

2. Battery life. This really disapoints me. I am on my 3rd battery from ATT and this one is probably the worst. I get about 6-8 hours (depending on use) before I have to throw this thing on a charger. Not getting through a typical day on one charge is just unacceptable. I do not use my phone that often, maybe 5-10 calls a day lasting about 3-6 minutes each for the most part. I rarely have BT or WiFi on and I check FB and Twitter occasionally throughout the day. I have removed some apps that update themselves (ESPN, Engadget, etc.) and that has helped a bit, but not much, and quite honestly, I like those apps so why should I have to remove them because this battery sucks. I do get several hundred emails a day and I am using Touchdown for that so they are pushed to me.

3. Random phone shutdowns - Doesn't happen that often, maybe 2 or 3 times a month, but thats 2 or 3 times to many for me.

So that being said, I am moving to the Motorola Atrix 4G when it releases later this month.

I want to thank everyone here for their help when I needed it and for learning all about the Android OS. This is a great forum from the excellent Captivate FAQ, the ALL THINGS ROOT, Troubleshooting, to the helpful community, I will miss it. I will most likely be spending my time here going forward.

Thanks agian everyone and I am sure I will see at least some of you in the Atrix form.

Regards,

Kevin

Were you running stock 2.1 or a hacked ROM? I ask because #1 and #2 I have not experienced. #3 is a known issue with a certain batch of phones and you should get your phone replaced for free. AT&T and Samsung both know about it (although they like to play dumb).

Whoa whoa whoa, where did u hear this realease date? I am also interested in the motorola atrix and the vizio via but I didn't hear any release dates. I may be right behind you if these phone's release dates aren't that far off. They might be a little to expensive for my pockets tho because with the dual core processor and 4g, not only will the phone be more expensive than most, but 4g will probably cost extra

I have no difinitive date, just the conjecture of other people and statements from Moto that this will be the first new Android phone to be released and they already committed to a Jan 17th date for a TMO andorid phone supposedly. Thats what I have read in other Atrix forums anyway. Also, AT&T said it would be released in Q1 and that makes in no further out than Feb since their Q1 ends in Feb from what someone said in other post.

Either way when it does come I am getting it.

Stock ROM, not hacked. I will look at getting the phone replaced if just for resale value. Thanks.

Real interesting about the new Motorola Atrix, had my eye out for some new info!

If only the Atrix was AMOLED... pretty sure it's just going to be LCD. I can't go back to LCD.

I'll be joining you in the Atrix forum to Kstruck. Still love my captivate but the Motorola just seems to have the complete package. Working in IT the remote desktop setup is magnificent.

The AMOLED is definitely awesome, but I'd have to weigh that vs. all the other potential perks (better resolution, faster, two cams, a _funtional_ GPS, etc.). Of course, sometimes the sum of the whole is less than the sum of the parts, so it'll be interesting to see how it performs in the real world. Especially the battery life, considering the processor. Not to mention the financial aspect, as I'm not going to take a huge loss just to change phones.

The Atrix looks like a real nice phone. I think I'd go for it if I could, but that's not going to happen until my contract is up, and by then even the Atrix will be old news.

They've announced qHD 4" display for the Moto Atrix 4G. I dunno if qHD is fancy for LCD but it sounds like a step up in the right direction. You're right, sAMOLED is the best, though.

qHD stands for quarter of full HD. Full HD is 1920x1080, so a quarter of that is 960x540. Thus qHD only specifies the resolution and not the display type.

i dont like motorola phones, while yes the display doesnt live up to the samoled, the biggest thing for me was the unresponsive touchscreen. ive only ever played with 2 motorola phones, a DX and D2, and i found myself missing letters when typing that i know i pressed, and having to scroll constantly as it wouldnt read my finger i guess. that was my biggest gripe

Hope you find greener pastures and good luck.

Also...

Nice to see someone air their grievances without sounding whiny and complaining about them.

All too often it seems to be some long drawn out "I want to troll you more than anything" ordeal.

Damnn. I have to ask, how'd the video card on this phone? Is it the dual core processor that allows it to be hooked up to a full monitor/mouse/keyboard, or does it just let it run better. I mean, I'm inclined to believe that the Captivate IS possible of this, maybe not as fast, but I mean, 1 GHz processor and 512 MB RAM, that's pretty close to the specs of my Netbook except for the RAM, and considering not running Windows or anything to extensive, if I only need a Chrome OS/Linux type of setup, this seems perfect. It might be too much, but I do feel that the Captivate is capable of much, much more than it offers currently, and the developers for the phone can really step it up and make some magic happen.

Not all GHz are created equal. We're talking entirely different CPU architectures here. You can't compare.

Is an RC car at 3000 RPM as fast and powerful as a Ferrari at 3000 RPM?

I don't think the captivate is capable of pushing 1080p... but, I do think it is capable of docking solutions should samsung persue it..

I just don't think they were that ambitious.

I also don't think its really practical.. even if you can.. whats the point? I mean.. I think a decent word program with a blue tooth keyboard small enough to fit in a backpack would be more than enough to compete in a lot of ways..

Sony Arc > Atrix IMO.

How so? It's lower resolution, and while the Snapdragon 8255 isn't a slouch, the dual core Tegra 2 has pretty stunning CPU and GPU performance.

Everything else considered equal, except for the Sony's 0.2" larger display (which further drives down the PPI), I don't see how it's better at this stage of the game[?] Does the Sony have a front-facing-camera?

I know the Arc will be using some of Sony's good camera tech, and I believe it's a 8MP setup, though 5MP I've always found to be excellent for camera phones considering the sensors used (and if you're looking for printable source, that'a an easy 8x10 or even 10x14).

I also guess it depends on if you have a predisposition toward Sony equipment vs. Motorola.

I'm moving to Verizon and getting a Bionic when it comes out.
If I see something better before then on verizon I reserve the right to change my mind.

Haven't you guys learned by now to wait and do your research on the phone before declaring yourself a guaranteed buyer? You're asking for a repeat of your negative experiences with the Captivate.
